Mitchell Barnett<\/a> was one of many new inclusions unveiled by NSW Blues coach Michael Maguire<\/a> for the State of Origin opener, with the Warriors star revealing he received the call-up just minutes after leaving the field in round 12.<\/p>\n

The stand-in Warriors<\/a> skipper, who has averaged 150 run metres and 33 tackles per game this year, was a driving force in the side's thrilling comeback victory against the Dolphins at Go Media Stadium on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

Maguire announced his squad less than an hour after the match concluded, with Barnett named in the team's extended squad alongside Matt Burton \ufeffand Luke Keary as reserves.<\/p>\n

Speaking post-game, Barnett informed reporters that he had received the call from coach Maguire just moments before walking into the media room.<\/p>\n

"I actually just got a phone call then," he said.<\/p>\n

"All I know is that I'm on a plane tomorrow and that I'm in the squad.<\/p>\n

"I think it is the reward of my teammates for helping me get there and for holding me accountable each day. It was a nice moment for myself and my family.<\/p>\n

"It's been something that has been on the bucket list for a while. I hadn't given myself the opportunity early on in my career, through injuries and ill-discipline.<\/p>\n

"I'm excited for the challenge ahead and what the role will look like for me."<\/p>\n

The Warriors released the heartwarming footage of the side's post-match celebrations including the team learning Barnett had received an Origin call-up.<\/p>\n

Head coach Andrew Webster<\/a>, who has been pushing Barnett's Origin case in recent weeks, offered nothing but praise for the star, claiming that the 30-year-old "ticks all of the boxes" required for players to earn a call-up into a representative squad.<\/p>\n

"I'm super proud of him. He has worked so hard and he has been the glue for the team over the last two weeks," Webster said.<\/p>\n

"He deserves it\u2026 some people are made for Origin and he is made for it. That is his arena. It's tough, it's hard, you've got to understand the game and what you're doing.<\/p>\n

"You have to get it together quickly and mix well in a short space of time. He just ticks all of those boxes.<\/p>\n
