A tough start to the Indianapolis 500<\/a> turned terrible for Marcus Ericsson whose race lasted all of a few seconds when rookie Tom Blomqvist spun and took the Swede out of contention.<\/p>\n

Ericsson, who won the 2022 edition, crashed in practice for The Greatest Spectacle In Racing and barely made it into the 500-mile race after going through last-chance qualifying.<\/p>\n

Starting from the rear of the field, the Andretti Global driver couldn't avoid the spinning Meyer Shank Racing car in turn one on lap one.<\/p>\n

UK-born Blomqvist slid up into the path of Ericsson and the pair slammed into the outside wall.<\/p>\n

An innocent victim in the melee was Pietro Fittipaldi, who copped a whack from Callum Ilott as the pair tried to avoid the spinning cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fittipaldi spun before going rearward into the wall while Ilott was able to continue without damage.<\/p>\n

Ericsson slapped his steering wheel in disgust and expressed his disappointment after being medically cleared.<\/p>\n

"I can't believe it," said Ericsson on Stan Sport's coverage.<\/p>\n

"It's unbelievable. It's just so frustrating. I don't know what to say.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We had to work so hard. The team did such a good job rebuilding that car. We fight it all week to be good and then this happens. I just can't believe it. I can't believe it."<\/p>\n

Asked what he felt in the car, Blomqvist replied, "Obviously not a lot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm just so disappointed for the guys because we haven't made a single mistake all month long and then I make a silly error at the start just getting a little bit too low, clipped the kerb.<\/p>\n

"At those speeds, there's not much force on it just spun me around. I'm gutted for the guys. Most importantly everyone is fine.<\/p>\n

'I'm disappointed for the team. They've worked so, so hard. I think our cars are really, really good in these race conditions. I'm just sad for them more than anything.\u00a0<\/p>\n
