S\ufefft Kilda<\/a> has slumped to 15th on the AFL ladder, after a 38-point loss at the hands of Melbourne on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

It leaves the Saints with a dismal \ufeff3-8 record after 11 rounds, as questions continued to be raised around the ability of coach Ross Lyon<\/a> and his defensive game plan.<\/p>\n

Lyon defended his side's loss, and attempted to draw attention to the positives, headlined by blooding young players.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"We're transitioning. Last year we played finals and not many talk about it, but the important ones do," Lyon said post match.<\/p>\n

"The ones that want to prosecute a positive case will tell you, I think it was …. 21 and under. No one played more 21-and-unders\ufeff and got more games into them and played finals, in the last 15 years, than us.<\/p>\n

"But no one wants to prosecute that case. But it doesn't matter now.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

AFL great Jimmy Bartel questions Lyon's game plan.<\/p>\n

"I'll prosecute it for you, yes you're young, but your game style is not stacking up to the way teams play at the moment," Bartel said on Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em> on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

"(They are ranked) 16th for scores.\ufeff That is typical for a Ross Lyon side. You are 18th from scores from forward half."<\/p>\n

Over their last three matches, the Saints have kicked seven, eight and nine goals against their opposition.<\/p>\n

They lost all three of those games to Hawthorn, Fremantle and the Demons.\ufeff<\/p>\n

While Bartel loves Lyon's defensive\ufeff game, which can genuinely choke sides, he believes the Saints aren't smart enough to utilise their shut down to apply scoreboard pressure.<\/p>\n

"I get the ball movement from your back half is great, and I acknowledge how well they defend," he said.<\/p>\n

"But the modern game is about forward half turnovers and scores from stoppages … they're 18th for scores from forward half."<\/p>\n

Bartel is urging Lyon to reinvent the side's key cogs, calling on Max King to be utilised the way Geelong has moved forward Jeremy Cameron up the ground.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWhy not give (Mattaes) Phillipou a role at half back? Why not ask Max King to come up the ground and be a bit of that connecting piece, to get the ball into that forward half," Bartel said.<\/p>\n
