{"id":397381,"date":"2024-05-27T00:58:54","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T00:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=397381"},"modified":"2024-05-27T02:05:33","modified_gmt":"2024-05-27T02:05:33","slug":"newgarden-wins-indy-500-with-last-lap-pass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=397381","title":{"rendered":"Newgarden wins Indy 500 with last lap pass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Josef Newgarden has won the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/indy-500\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Indianapolis 500\">Indianapolis 500<\/a> for the second year running with a last lap pass on Pato O&#x27;Ward for the lead.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, the Team Penske pilot became the first driver in 22 years to win back-to-back after Helio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002.<\/p>\n<p>O&#x27;Ward took the lead on the final lap of the race but Newgarden surged back by him at the second-to-last turn, sealing victory for Roger Penske.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Stan Sport is the only place to watch the 2024 IndyCar Series.<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/9.nine.com.au\/DnH61N\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In doing so, Newgarden becomes the 11th two-time winner of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"372bc356-a110-490e-8936-d2e702a61e79\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/372bc356-a110-490e-8936-d2e702a61e79\" alt=\"Josef Newgarden celebrates after winning the 108th Indianapolis 500.\" data-width=\"4035\" data-height=\"2690\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Newgarden wiped away tears as he stood on the pagoda, celebrating with the team.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I knew we could win this race again, it&#x27;s just a matter of getting it right,&quot; said the two-time IndyCar Series winner.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;There&#x27;s no better way to win a race than that. I&#x27;ve got to give it up to Pato as well. He is an incredibly clean driver. It takes two people to make that work.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;So it&#x27;s not just a good pass, it&#x27;s also someone that you&#x27;re working with that&#x27;s incredibly clean.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#x27;ve gotta give hats off to Pato. He could have easily won this race too but it just fell our way.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"ae8e95d4-ba90-43fd-be15-1c0bfd157689\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/ae8e95d4-ba90-43fd-be15-1c0bfd157689\" alt=\"Marcus Ericsson climbs over the nose of Tom Blomqvist after the Meyer Shank Racing car spun on lap one of the 108th Indianapolis 500.\" data-width=\"2112\" data-height=\"1408\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The race was frenetic from lap one to 200 with a series of incidents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The drama began just seconds in when Meyer Shank Racing&#x27;s Tom Blomqvist spun on his own at turn one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He looped around into the path of 2022 Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson. The pair made heavy contact and slapped the outside wall.<\/p>\n<p>Pietro Fittipaldi of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing was an innocent victim in the melee. He was hit by McLaren&#x27;s Callum Ilott as the pair tried to take avoiding action.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6353728045112\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/tn-indy-2.png\" alt=\"Indy 500 winner crashes out on first lap\" data-vms-id=\"ref:clwo1yabg001i0hnwv0exs42h\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While under control of the safety car, Marcus Armstrong retired his car with an engine failure, the first of three Honda blow-ups.<\/p>\n<p>The sole female in the race, Katherine Legge, was forced to retire on lap 22 when her engine blew up and brought out the second caution of the race.<\/p>\n<p>The third restart of the race didn&#x27;t last long. Chip Ganassi Racing&#x27;s Linus Lundqvist spun on his own at turn one on lap 27.<\/p>\n<p>Having lost Blomqvist earlier in the race, Meyer Shank Racing suffered its second DNF when Felix Rosenqvist&#x27;s engine blew on lap 56.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6353730033112\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pickerimage-129.jpg\" alt=\"Bizarre Indy 500 crash leaves commentators bemused\" data-vms-id=\"ref:clwo3fx60001f0ho4xwdt1w5m\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Running second in the race, Colton Herta crashed at turn one and wiped his nose across the outside wall on lap 86.<\/p>\n<p>In a surprise move, he let the recovery crew tow his car back to the pit lane, all but ending his hopes of victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With only cosmetic damage to the car, Herta returned to the race after a new nose cone was fitted \u2013 albeit, laps down on the leader.<\/p>\n<p>A bizarre incident on lap 107 between Scott Dixon and Ryan Hunter-Reay resulted in the 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner completing a 360-degree spin.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6353727792112\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pickerimage-130.jpg\" alt=\"IndyCar champ goes for scary 360-degree spin\" data-vms-id=\"ref:clwo45lff001o0gntrho8j8ci\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dixon closed the door on Hunter-Reay into turn three but was not penalised for the move.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Andretti brought out the penultimate caution on lap 114 in a similar incident to Lundqvist, losing control into turn one.<\/p>\n<p>The final yellow flew on lap 147 when Will Power slapped the outside wall at turn one from 15th on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Having started from pole position, Scott McLaughlin led the most laps of anyone with 66. However, he faded towards the tail end of the race.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6353731334112\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/pickerimage-131.jpg\" alt=\"Will Power crashes out of Indy 500\" data-vms-id=\"ref:clwo5avpp001a0hpfnxzdthpi\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A bold strategy by Dixon brought him to the fore and he led Newgarden after the final pit stops were completed. McLaren duo Alexander Rossi and O&#x27;Ward weren&#x27;t far behind with Dixon&#x27;s teammate Alex Palou in fifth.<\/p>\n<p>The top four battled over the lead in the final 25 laps, trading places at the front of the field as they all conserved fuel.<\/p>\n<p>As the laps wore down, O&#x27;Ward made his move for the lead with five to go. Newgarden responded and took the lead back almost immediately.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What followed was a high-speed game of chicken as O&#x27;Ward looked for the right time to pass.<\/p>\n<p>On the final lap, he went to Newgarden&#x27;s inside into turn one. With the lead in hand, O&#x27;Ward weaved from left to right in a bid to break the slipstream.<\/p>\n<p>However, Newgarden was able to utilise the draft and went around O&#x27;Ward&#x27;s outside into the penultimate turn to take back the lead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IndyCar\/status\/1794879004396388507?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"embed-social embed-twitter\" data-show-caption=\"false\" data-conversation=\"none\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/IndyCar\/status\/1794879004396388507?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the finish line, Newgarden led O&#x27;Ward by a mere 0.341s. Dixon wound up third ahead of Rossi and Palou.<\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin was sixth ahead of Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti Global), Santino Ferrucci (AJ Foyt Racing), Rinus VeeKay (Ed Carpenter Racing), and Conor Daly (Dreyer &amp; Reinbold Racing).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Josef Newgarden has won the Indianapolis 500 for the second year running with a last lap pass on Pato O&#x27;Ward for the lead.
