{"id":397334,"date":"2024-05-26T16:15:59","date_gmt":"2024-05-26T16:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=397334"},"modified":"2024-05-26T21:05:30","modified_gmt":"2024-05-26T21:05:30","slug":"leclerc-wins-monaco-grand-prix-after-monster-crash-destroys-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=397334","title":{"rendered":"Leclerc wins Monaco Grand Prix after &#039;monster&#039; crash destroys cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wwos.com.au\/Ferrari\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Ferrari\">Ferrari<\/a> driver <a href=\"http:\/\/wwos.com.au\/Charles-Leclerc\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Charles Leclerc\">Charles Leclerc<\/a> has won the restarted Monaco Grand Prix from pole position after an enormous first-lap crash stopped the crown jewel event just seconds into the race.<\/p>\n<p>In his first <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/f1\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"F1\">F1<\/a> victory in nearly two years and first ever in his home race, Leclerc finished about eight seconds ahead of Australian McLaren driver <a href=\"http:\/\/wwos.com.au\/oscar-piastri\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Oscar Piastri\">Oscar Piastri<\/a> and nine seconds clear of Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz Jr in third.<\/p>\n<p>The second place result was Piastri&#x27;s equal-best F1 GP finish.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Watch the 2024 Indianapolis 500 on May 27 only on Stan Sport.<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/9.nine.com.au\/DnH61N\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"eb6f497b-e1d3-4150-80f2-25a93cb96213\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/eb6f497b-e1d3-4150-80f2-25a93cb96213\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"4666\" data-height=\"3067\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Leclerc <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/motorsport\/f1-news-2024-monaco-grand-prix-qualifying-results-red-bull-complete-disaster-oscar-piastri-second-charles-leclerc-pole\/91f2f644-87f9-499e-be21-9a8def58343e\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"\">was on pole<\/a> for the third time in four years, but had previously never finished on the podium at his home race.<\/p>\n<p>His first win since Austria in July 2022 took his career tally to six, all with Ferrari.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Tonight&#x27;s going to be a big night,&quot; he told his team over the radio.<\/p>\n<p>Championship leader Max Verstappen started and finished sixth for Red Bull, whose other driver, Sergio Perez, went out of the race after a big first-lap crash.<\/p>\n<p>The melee began at the back of the field when Perez and Haas driver Kevin Magnussen made contact on the straight between turns two and three.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"abe2383a-ab52-46c8-a47f-c4d27a99da92\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/abe2383a-ab52-46c8-a47f-c4d27a99da92-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"3000\" data-height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Magnussen&#x27;s teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, tried to slip past the chaos unfolding to his right but was clipped by Perez and sent into a spin.<\/p>\n<p>All three cars were shredded, with the Mexican&#x27;s car worst off with three of his four wheels torn from the chassis.<\/p>\n<p>The drivers were not hurt but the race was interrupted by a red flag for 40 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The race restarted on lap three of 78 and the drivers pulled away cleanly but slowly, with Leclerc managing his tyres on a track notoriously difficult for overtaking.<\/p>\n<p>McLaren&#x27;s Lando Norris finished fourth and Mercedes driver George Russell held off Verstappen to take fifth place. Australian Daniel Ricciardo finished 12th.<\/p>\n<p>The lap one crash drew the ire of Sky Sport F1 commentators David Croft and Martin Brundle as well as analysts Anthony Davidson and 2009 champion Jenson Button.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/F1\/status\/1794783306048786518?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"embed-social embed-twitter\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/F1\/status\/1794783306048786518?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/F1\/status\/1794721211550986300?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"embed-social embed-twitter\" data-show-caption=\"false\" data-conversation=\"none\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/F1\/status\/1794721211550986300?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What followed was a lengthy delay as the clean-up and barrier repair took place.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That&#x27;s huge,&quot; said Brundle.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He&#x27;s obviously been spun around and been whacked by cars coming past. That&#x27;s extraordinary. That&#x27;s written off every single piece of that Formula 1 car.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Magnussen could find himself in strife having accrued 10 penalty points. The threshold for a one-race ban is 12 points.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He&#x27;s got Kevin Magnussen to his right and Magnussen just keeps on pushing up there,&quot; Brundle said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;That is a monster of an accident. It was unnecessary for Kevin Magnussen to keep his car there. He&#x27;s taken both cars out and Perez, but there was a point quite a bit earlier when KMag should have abandoned that.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"80058df2-760b-41eb-ba54-4acd0595d73f\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/80058df2-760b-41eb-ba54-4acd0595d73f-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"The destroyed car of Sergio Perez after crashing in the Monaco Grand Prix.\" data-width=\"5501\" data-height=\"3668\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the incident, Magnussen apportioned some of the blame to Perez.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;From my point of view, I had a good part of my front (alongside) Perez&#x27;s rear,&quot; said Magnussen.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;When he went to the wall I just got pushed into the wall and made contact with him. I trusted that he was going to leave a space for me since I was there.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#x27;s not a corner you&#x27;re braking into. It&#x27;s just like a little bend in the straight. You have to have a car width or otherwise you leave the other guy no option.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Magnussen said he expected race stewards would investigate the crash but wasn&#x27;t sure of the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We&#x27;ll see how they look at that but from my point of view I was there and I got squeezed to the wall,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#x27;t know how they&#x27;re going to look at it.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/F1\/status\/1794720626730766583?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"embed-social embed-twitter\" data-show-caption=\"false\" data-conversation=\"none\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/F1\/status\/1794720626730766583?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later on lap one, Alpine teammates Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly made contact at Portier.<\/p>\n<p>Gasly blew up deluxe on the radio, complaining of damage to his car. Ocon also suffered significant damage to his car.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What did he do? What did he do? Why did he try to attack me?
