Oscar Piastri<\/a> will start the Monaco Grand Prix<\/a> from second on the grid after a stunning performance in qualifying.<\/p>\n

Piastri's final lap in qualifying left him barely a tenth and a half behind the Ferrari<\/a> of polesitter and home hero Charles Leclerc<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It will be Piastri's second career front row start. He also qualified second last time out at Imola, before a penalty demoted him to fifth.<\/p>\n

Championship leader Max Verstappen<\/a> was chasing a record 10th-straight pole position, but was forced to back out of his final surge at pole after hitting the wall at the first corner.<\/p>\n

His teammate Sergio Perez will line up 18th after what he described as a "complete disaster" of a session for the team.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Piastri said a couple of mistakes late in his final lap cost him a chance at pole.<\/p>\n

"I think if you took the second half of my first lap in Q3 and the first half of the second one, it would have been enough," Piastri said.<\/p>\n

"A couple of mistakes at the end, but credit to Charles because he's been incredibly quick all weekend. At certain points I don't think anyone thought we were going to get close to him.<\/p>\n

"[It's] nice to be starting on the front row. I feel like it's been a good weekend in terms of building momentum, and what better colours to do it in than these."<\/p>\n

Piastri and McLaren teammate Lando Norris are running a special livery commemorating the 30th anniversary of the death of Ayrton Senna<\/a>, who won each of his three world championships driving for McLaren.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Daniel Ricciardo qualified 13th, but will line up 12th after both Haas' were disqualified for a technical infringement.<\/p>\n

Given Monaco is the hardest track on the F1 calendar to overtake, Piastri said he will need to either get past Leclerc off the line, or through strategy.<\/p>\n

"A good start always helps, and if you can get into the lead you can control it very easily around here, so that's probably the first goal," the 23-year-old said.<\/p>\n

"If not then with strategy.<\/p>\n

"As optimistic as I want to be, overtaking around here is not easy. We'll try our best but starting from a good spot, [there is the] chance for a good day tomorrow."<\/p>\n

For Verstappen, sixth marks a rare bad day in the office.\ufeff<\/p>\n

A day after saying his car was "jumping like a kangaroo" during practice, the three-time world champion was no happier with how it felt going around Monaco's tight and winding 3.3km track.<\/p>\n

"(It) has been very difficult over the curves and bumps so has not been good to drive on this kind of track," Verstappen said.<\/p>\n

"The ride of the car is not good and it has been bouncing around a lot, which makes it really tricky. We have tried everything to solve the issue, but I still felt like I was often close to going into the wall."<\/p>\n

Verstappen has won five of seven races this season and had taken every pole to this point.<\/p>\n

But the warning signs were already there \u2013 he failed to lead any of the three practices and finished one as low as 11th.<\/p>\n

"It has not been a good weekend for the team in general," he said. "Nothing has helped optimise the performance of the car."<\/p>\n

Verstappen won Monaco from pole last year, but he knows that clinching a 60th career victory from so far back is a tall order even with such a dominant car.<\/p>\n

"We are not expecting miracles," he said.<\/p>\n

What makes Verstappen's struggles even more of a shock is that Monaco has traditionally been one of Red Bull's strongest circuits. They've won four of the past five races in the principality.<\/p>\n

Even more baffling was the performance of Perez. He was knocked out in the first part of qualifying and will start the race from 18th on the grid.<\/p>\n

"Today was a complete disaster, we didn\u2019t get into the rhythm and we didn\u2019t have the pace," Perez said.<\/p>\n

"On my final lap when things were looking good, I came to turns six and seven, they were full of traffic. Then there were some stickers or something laid down on the track."<\/p>\n

It's rare enough to beat Red Bull these days; so perhaps it's a good sign when the team is looking hopefully at the weather charts.<\/p>\n

"Unless there is some rain tomorrow, we cannot hope for much," Perez said. "There is nearly zero chance to overtake around here.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Verstappen does not win, it will be his third time this season without a victory \u2014 as many as all of last year.<\/p>\n
