Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire<\/a> has doubled down on his bold idea for North Melbourne<\/a> to ensconce itself in the city's northern suburbs.<\/p>\n

Last month, McGuire\ufeff suggested that the Kangaroos should forge a presence in the outskirts of Melbourne to recruit players and supporters.<\/p>\n

McGuire \ufeffwas concerned for North Melbourne's future after "some" AFL club presidents were opposed to the league featuring 19 teams<\/a> once Tasmania joins the competition in 2028.<\/p>\n

"If North don't [expand their influence], I can tell you, non-Victorian presidents and some of the Victorian presidents, don't want to have 19 teams," he previously told Nine's Eddie and Jimmy<\/em><\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n

"There's an easy solution for this. One will go."<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, McGuire visited the northern suburb of Broadmeadows for the opening of a new rugby league and community centre which will be used by the Melbourne Storm and NRL Victoria.<\/p>\n

"What was reall\ufeffy an outpost of Broadmeadows has now been turned into something sensational," McGuire said of the new state-of-the-art facility.<\/p>\n

"So, that's great. Three cheers for rugby league."<\/p>\n

With the Storm creating an arm from its base in the \ufeffheart of Melbourne's CBD, McGuire also noted the number of other sports setting up camp in the northern suburbs.<\/p>\n

McGuire described how \ufeffHume City Council's mayor Naim Kurt approached him at the opening and rubber-stamped his concept.<\/p>\n

"[Kurt] grabbed me and said, 'I've listened to \ufeffyou and Jimmy and what you had to say about North Melbourne'," McGuire told Nine's Eddie and Jimmy<\/em> podcast on Monday.<\/p>\n

"He said: 'I am a mad North Melbourne supporter, we would love North Melbourne to do as you said'.<\/p>\n

Kurt broached the Hume district suburb of Kalkallo \u2014 31km north of Melbourne's city centre \u2014 which is growing rapidly.<\/p>\n

"He mentioned the thousands of families that are moving into that area and he said, 'We would love to be involved," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

McGuire also pointed out the established \ufeffunder-18s AFL set up in Craigieburn that is already receiving investment.<\/p>\n

With the idea hinging on "first hand up gets it", McGuire declared \ufeffhe would contact North Melbourne president Sonja Hood, and if the Kangaroos were not interested, Collingwood president Jeff Browne.<\/p>\n

"I'm going to ring Sonja Hood today and say, 'Listen, don't take this the wrong way and you're probably onto it anyway', but if not, I said to [Kurt] I'll ring Jeff Browne," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

Geelong Cats great Jimmy Bartel<\/a> agreed that there was potential to be found further north.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Go where the population is \ufeff… The more people following the game, the better long-term," he said.<\/p>\n

"If we're bringing in new teams, we need new talent and new supporters."<\/p>\n

The discussion comes as the winless Kangaroos \ufeffcontinue to flounder at the bottom of the league's ladder after their 40-point loss to the Bombers on Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
