Football legend Leigh Matthews<\/a>\ufeff believes the AFL will work to stamp out the accidental bump from St Kilda's Jimmy Webster, that saw Fremantle's Michael Frederick knocked out on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

Frederick was running to collect a mark in the opening minute of their 17-point win on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium, when Webster came in from the side and made contact.<\/p>\n

The Saints defender collected Frederick mid air, forcing the Docker onto his back in a brutal landing that concussed him.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Frederick lay motionless on the turf for a matter of seconds before he was attended to by trainers.<\/p>\n

The Docker was then subbed off immediately under the AFL's concussion protocols.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Webster was let off for the act, with it being deemed an accident.<\/p>\n

However, Matthews isn't convince he'd get away with that in the future, as the league continue to push the importance of head safety and the dangerous impacts of concussion in the long term.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The tribunal decided that that is accidental. I would argue that there's some carelessness in that," Matthews said on Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em> on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

"It was accidental that he hit him in the head, but it wasn't accidental that he made contact.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He saw Frederick. He was trying to spoil, he wasn't trying to hit him in the head.<\/p>\n

\"Frederick<\/p>\n

"What I'm basically saying is, he was let off by the current match review process and regulations.<\/p>\n

"Eventually, that kind of heavy spoil that creates concussion, will be suspendable in the future.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The concussion conundrum is trying to get rid of every action that creates a concussion."<\/p>\n

Matthews comments come after Nine's Eddie McGuire confirmed the AFL is on the brink of releasing seven-point concussion<\/a> plan that will change the way head trauma is viewed and attacked in the game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Three AFL players have already hung up the boots in 2024<\/a> after being forced to medically retire from the game, on top of the multiple class actions from former V\/AFL players regarding their concussion history.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The allowable physical contact rules have been tightened and tightened and tightened," Matthews said.<\/p>\n

"We now know that a careless \ufeffbump to the head will be suspendable.<\/p>\n

\"Frederick<\/p>\n

"We know that a careless tackle, where you take the player to the ground and his head might hit the turf, you'll be suspended.<\/p>\n

"But what about being suspended potentially in a spoiling situation?<\/p>\n

Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw<\/a>, Collingwood's Nathan Murphy<\/a> and Bulldogs draftee Aiden O'Driscoll<\/a>, who didn't play a senior game, have all been medically retired in 2024.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
