Jimmy Bartel<\/a> has declared that St Kilda<\/a> cannot compete for finals or win a premiership if they continue under coach Ross Lyon<\/a>'s defence-first game plan.<\/p>\n

It comes after the Saints slumped to a 17-point loss at the hands of Fremantle in round 10.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The most recent loss also makes their 2023 finals berth look like a comple\ufeffte outlier.<\/p>\n

This time last year, Lyon's Saints were 7-3 after 10 rounds. Now, at the same point in 2024, they sit with a dismal 3-7 record.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Lyon's defence-first game style has come under scrutiny, with his side managing to kick just eight goals in round 10 and seven the week before.<\/p>\n

"You can't win a premiership from 15th (in the league) for attack," Bartel said on Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em> on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Footballing legend Leigh Matthews<\/a> also weighed in on the situation down at Linton Street\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"I don't think that Ross Lyon is coaching any different to what he was 10, 12 months ago," Matthews said.<\/p>\n

But it's the lack of development from their forwardline, headlined by Max King, who have been steadily declining in 2024 that has left the greats puzzled.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Basically their forwards have all dropped off," he said.<\/p>\n

"They've got a lot of their players forward of centre, that all of a sudden aren't playing as well this year."<\/p>\n

However, there are multiple ways to analyse the Saints' downfall, with Bartel questioning whether it's a personnel or game plan issue.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Leigh, you believe the players are down, whereas some people believe they're down because they refuse to take the ball forward to those guys," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

"Chicken and the egg," Matthews replied.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Meantime, 9News Melbourne's chief football reporter Tom Morris broke down comments from\ufeff St Kilda president Andrew Bassat that prove they're nowhere near where they thought they'd be after their short finals berth in 2023.<\/p>\n

"It really feels like we're not too far from the top of the hill. We've done the hard work. It feels like we're pushing the right direction," Bassat said back in 2023, when the Saints sat with a 10-8 record.<\/p>\n

"I think St Kilda's in a world of hurt," Morris said.<\/p>\n

"I think behind the scenes, if you're going to ask the leaders there honestly, they would agree they're in a world of hurt."\ufeff<\/p>\n
