Jurgen Klopp<\/a> marked his farewell at Liverpool<\/a> by chanting the name of Arne Slot, his likely successor, during a goodbye speech inside Anfield on Monday morning AEST.<\/p>\n

Wearing a red hoodie with the words \u201cI'll Never Walk Alone\u201d on the back, Klopp regaled the home fans, leading the chant \u201cArne Slot, la la la la la\u201d \u2014 to the tune of \u201cLive is Life\u201d by Austrian band Opus.<\/p>\n

Slot, who has been coach at Dutch club Feyenoord since 2021, said last week that he will be the next Liverpool manager. Neither of the clubs have officially confirmed the appointment.<\/p>\n

Klopp is leaving after nearly nine years at Anfield. His last match was an emotionally charged 2-0 win over Wolverhampton.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou welcome the new manager like you welcomed me,\u201d Klopp roared down the microphone as Liverpool fans joined the Arne Slot chant.<\/p>\n

Slot ended his time at Feyenoord by leading the team to a 4-0 win over Excelsior in the Dutch league on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The match on the final day of the Premier League<\/a> season doubled as a tribute to the German coach who led Liverpool to seven major trophies in his nearly nine years at the club and forged such a connection with the city that he has been compared to Bill Shankly \u2014 the club\u2019s legendary manager from 1959-74.<\/p>\n

No wonder Klopp looked emotional throughout an afternoon that Liverpool fans never wanted to come.<\/p>\n

They lined the streets outside Anfield to welcome Klopp and his players and then produced a paper mosaic of the word \u201cJURGEN\u201d in the stand opposite the dugouts as he emerged for the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are calling it The Last Dance. So let\u2019s dance,\u201d Klopp told Sky Sports on the field before kickoff \u2014 and Liverpool obliged by strolling to one final victory for Klopp thanks to goals by Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah.<\/p>\n

In some ways, it was business as usual for Klopp.<\/p>\n

He touched the \u201cThis is Anfield\u201d sign in the tunnel on the way out to the pitch.<\/p>\n

He patrolled the middle of the field with his hands behind his back during the warmups, watching his own team \u2014 and then, with that trademark glare, his opponents.<\/p>\n

He waved to fans behind the Liverpool dugout and tapped his heart just ahead of kickoff, before soaking in an impassioned rendition of the club's anthem, \u201cYou\u2019ll Never Walk Alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis morning I woke up,\u201d Klopp said before the game, \u201cand I was completely in game mode.\u201d<\/p>\n

The farewell party really started after the final whistle, which he marked by embracing each member of his backroom staff and also Wolves manager Gary O\u2019Neil.<\/p>\n

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was in tears as he hugged Klopp near the centre circle.<\/p>\n

The goodbye celebrations reached a crescendo as Klopp walked back out onto the field about 45 minutes after full-time, wearing a red hoodie with the words \u201cThank You Luv\u201d on the front and \u201cI\u2019ll Never Walk Alone\u201d on the back, to speak to the crowd one last time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel like an end. It feels like a start,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

"Because I saw a football team full of youth, full of creativity, full of desire.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor a few weeks, I got too much attention and it felt really uncomfortable but this time I realised a lot of things. People told me I turned them from doubters into believers. That's not true. Believing is an act. You had to do it yourself. You did it. And nobody tells you now to stop believing.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold now in tears, Klopp continued in his speech to the home fans: \u201cBecause we have you, the superpower of world football.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liverpool finished third in the standings, nine points behind champion Manchester City, but at least won a trophy in Klopp's final season \u2014 the English League Cup.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
