Oscar Piastri<\/a> has blamed the qualifying penalty \u2013 that wasn't his fault \u2013 which dropped him to fifth on the starting grid for his Emilia Romagna Grand Prix "struggles".<\/p>\n

Piastri initially qualified second on the grid, less than a tenth of a second behind polesitter Max Verstappen<\/a>, before a penalty for blocking relegated him to fifth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a race where overtaking was difficult, he would recover only to fourth by the flag. Verstappen survived a late surge from Lando Norris to win the race.<\/p>\n

Piastri spent the early part of the race stuck behind the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz. He was able to leapfrog him during the pitstop cycle, but could make no further impression.<\/p>\n

"A few ifs leaving this weekend, especially on our side of the garage," Piastri said<\/p>\n

"I think the whole weekend has been really strong for both the team and myself, I think I've been confident form the first lap of practice and had a really good qualifying."<\/p>\n

Ahead of the last race in Miami, McLaren introduced a slew of fresh upgrades, of which only half made it to Piastri's car. He got the rest of them for the Imola race weekend.<\/p>\n

Piastri said he feels the team is capable of challenging Red Bull on a more regular basis.<\/p>\n

"I'm very happy, feel like I've built a bit of good momentum in the last two weekends, which is something I've been trying to aim for a bit more.<\/p>\n

"And I think as a team, we're proving on different tracks, different conditions \u2013 which are generally conditions we've struggled in in the past \u2013 that we're there in the fight for wins."<\/p>\n

Back at the front, \ufeffVerstappen survived a late charge from Miami winner Norris to win by less than a second and extend his championship lead.<\/p>\n

Verstappen led from pole and comfortably gapped the field on the soft tyre, but struggled after his pitstop on the hard tyre.<\/p>\n

Norris started the final tour just over a second behind, but was unable to mount a last-lap challenge.\ufeff It was Verstappen's 59th victory.<\/p>\n

"Especially the last 10, 15 laps, I had no grip any more. I was really sliding a lot. I saw Lando closing in,\u201d Verstappen said.<\/p>\n

"It\u2019s very difficult when the tires are not working any more and you have to go flat out, so I couldn\u2019t afford to make too many mistakes. Luckily, we didn\u2019t and super happy, of course, to win here today."<\/p>\n

Charles Leclerc was third for Ferrari, the Italian team's first podium finish at Imola since 2006, ahead of his home race in Monaco next week.<\/p>\n

Piastri was fourth, ahead of Sainz. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and his teammate George Russell were sixth and seventh.<\/p>\n

Verstappen's Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez was eighth, Yuki Tsunoda was ninth for RB and Lance Stroll took the last point in 10th for Aston Martin.<\/p>\n

Daniel Ricciardo started the race in ninth, but dropped back in the race to finish 13th.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The season continues next weekend at the famed Monaco Grand Prix<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n
