By the numbers, Will Power<\/a> is the fastest man in the IndyCar Series<\/a>. Yet, pole position at the Indianapolis 500<\/a> remains elusive.<\/p>\n

The Australian has the most pole positions of any driver in the series with 70 to his name.<\/p>\n

In his 17 qualifying attempts at the Indianapolis 500, the 43-year-old has qualified second on three occasions \u2013 including Monday's latest effort ahead of the 108th edition.<\/p>\n

The Toowoomba-born driver clocked a 233.917 mph (376.452 km\/h) four-lap average in the Fast Six, which was eclipsed by Team Penske stablemate Scott McLaughlin with a 234.220 mph (376.940 km\/h) run.<\/p>\n

Power couldn't help but laugh recounting the session. When McLaughlin's first lap topped out at 234.526 mph (377.433 km\/h) he conceded defeat.<\/p>\n

"It sucks, man. As soon as I saw the first lap, I knew it was over," said Power after qualifying at the 2.5-mile speedway.<\/p>\n

"To me, if I was going last and I saw my run, I would have definitely taken a couple of steps of rear wing out because mine was extremely consistent. My car never slid. I finished that and I was like, 'Man, that was easy'."<\/p>\n

Power admitted that he could have taken more rear wing angle out of the car, which would have reduced downforce and made the car faster over the four laps.<\/p>\n

McLaughlin made that change before his qualifying run, taking three degrees of angle out of the rear wing, which enabled him to go quickest.<\/p>\n

"That's basically what we needed in speed. Minus-three degrees (of rear wing) is around half a mile an hour. That was the benefit," said Power.<\/p>\n

"He was quicker in the (Fast) 12 and he was able to take that step.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"My run was comfortable enough to certainly trim," he added.<\/p>\n

"It was very consistent. Hardly any drop-off. Hardly sliding even on the last lap."<\/p>\n

Power has made finishing second something of a habit this year with three of the five races to date seeing him finish runner-up. He's second in the standings too.<\/p>\n

Power's career shows no sign of slowing down and there's every chance he could continue competing for many more years. Helio Castroneves at 49 years old is the oldest driver in the field.<\/p>\n

Power, however, isn't sure if he'll ever win the pole position at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.<\/p>\n

"I just keep getting seconds this year, but I'm not sure I'll ever get this pole position," he lamented.<\/p>\n

"For some weird reasons I just think it's one of those things where racing Gods go, 'Yeah, you can have the pole record, but you're certainly not going to get this one'.<\/p>\n

"That's just the irony of life. Like I said yesterday, it's not the end of the world if I don't. It's just a box to tick. It's a good one. Obviously the race winner is much bigger.<\/p>\n

"The two days of qualifying is very stressful. You put a lot on the line, and it's really hard to have the quickest car and the quickest team on that year.<\/p>\n

"To put all that together, that's a lot of things that have to align, and that's very difficult because you see every team.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"There's one car that just seems to be a little bit quicker for whatever reason, but I have to say that our cars have been the closest they've ever been, so it shows the quality control that we have. Yeah, second again."<\/p>\n
