The Eels missed exactly 50 tackles under the bright lights of Magic Round on Sunday night, copping a 48-16 thumping.<\/p>\n

And that was by a spare parts Storm team missing both their brilliant playmakers Jahrome Hughes and Cam Munster.<\/a><\/p>\n

The second half capitulation \u2013 which saw Arthur's side concede 32 points and only score six \u2013 was bitterly disappointing for the Eels, and the team has now blown out to more than 100-1 to win the comp by the bookies.<\/p>\n

The Eels look set to miss the finals for the second year in a row and that will put the board in a very awkward position.<\/p>\n

Parra have a squad with plenty of talent and tryscoring potential but some players just aren't putting in \u2013 as the awful loss to the Storm showed.<\/p>\n

Arthur is a fine mentor but every coach has a 'use by' date and Parra may well feel they need a new voice if things don't change before the end of the year.<\/p>\n

MORE MISERY FOR BUNNIES\ufeff<\/h3>\n

Not too long ago, experts were predicting the signing of superstar Jack Wighton at Souths would put the Bunnies back in grand final contention.<\/p>\n

With a fearsome pack, a great spine, and Wighton joining game-breakers Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker, the Rabbitohs appeared to have it all.<\/p>\n

But 11 rounds into the season, Souths' campaign is proving a nightmare.<\/p>\n

The club is sitting on the bottom of the ladder with just one win, coach Jason Demetriou has been sacked and the Rabbitohs are in real danger of collecting the wooden spoon.<\/p>\n

In Magic Round, the Bunnies played a Cowboys team that has also been struggling, staring at a sixth straight loss.<\/p>\n

And the Cowboys were poor, fumbling and bumbling their way through the 80 minutes – but were still too good for a dysfunctional Souths team.<\/p>\n

Where to now for Souths? The club needs a total reboot and maybe supercoach Wayne Bennett's arrival in 2025 can provide that.<\/p>\n

Until then, the Rabbitohs' faithful will be counting the days til the season ends what is proving a year of misery and heartache.<\/p>\n

MYSTERY MAN STARS AS WARRIORS BOUNCE BACK\ufeff<\/h3>\n

Magic Round was big for many teams, but none more so than the Warriors.<\/p>\n

Missing 10 players, the Warriors were rank outsiders against premiers Penrith, and then they lost hooker Wayde Egan early.<\/p>\n

The Panthers led early and the Warriors looked to have lost their way, but somehow carved out a brave win to turn around a poor start to the season.<\/p>\n

Egan's replacement, Paul Roache, can't even be found on the Warriors' website and went up as a silhouette instead of a head shot online.<\/p>\n

But he topped the tackle count and inspired the Warriors when thrown into the fray as a dazed Egan's afternoon ended early. The Warriors rattled the premiers, finished thoroughly deserved winners, and look to have turned their season around.<\/p>\n

CRONULLA'S PREMIERSHIP OMEN\ufeff<\/h3>\n

When your team has won just one premiership in nearly 60 years, you look to omens – and Cronulla have found one that gives them hope of winning the title in 2024.<\/p>\n

The epic Magic Round defeat of the Roosters on Saturday night was the Sharks' seventh win on the trot. The last time they achieved that feat was in 2016, when they won their lone grand final.<\/p>\n

The upset win over the red-hot Roosters showed the Sharks are right up there in an open premiership race.<\/p>\n

Seven straight wins in such a tough premiership is a wonderful feat, and maybe an omen for a second premiership.<\/p>\n

OFFERS SET TO ROLL IN FOR KNIGHTS ROOKIE\ufeff<\/h3>\n

Knights' fill-in fullback David Armstrong is a free agent in a few months, and the offers should be rolling in for his signature after another starring performance.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old Armstrong \u2013 virtually unknown before the season \u2013 was the name on everyone's lips after a sizzling hat trick in the come-from-behind win over the Titans.<\/p>\n

Armstrong scored the game's first two tries and then bagged the third to kick-start the Newcastle fightback early in the second half.<\/p>\n

With Ponga the first man chosen when fit, there is no point in Armstrong staying a Knight, and several clubs desperate for a fullback are certain to move to sign him.<\/p>\n

NO WALSH, NO WORRIES?\ufeff<\/h3>\n

Reece Walsh is arguably the most dynamic player in the game, but Friday night's gritty defeat of Manly showed the Broncos can win without their brilliant fullback.<\/p>\n

Selwyn Cobbo took over the fullback spot and produced a man of the match performance, running 222 metres, making several line breaks and proving a safe last line of defence.<\/p>\n

It was a big test for Cobbo, who is far more comfortable at wing or centre, and he was given a workout by Manly's polished kickers Daly Cherry-Evans and Luke Brooks.<\/p>\n

But the lanky utility back handled the pressure superbly and his performance will be a relief to coach Kevin Walters should Walsh miss any more footy in coming weeks.<\/p>\n

RAIDERS ROOKIE EN ROUTE TO MAJOR AWARD\ufeff<\/h3>\n

The season may not have reached its halfway point, but you can already mark Raiders dynamo Ethan Strange as the rookie of the year.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old came from nowhere to grab Jack Wighton's five-eighth spot at Canberra, and is playing like a 100-game veteran.<\/p>\n

Strange has amazing strength and confidence for a teenager and is set to develop into one of the game's superstars in coming years.<\/p>\n

In the thriller against the Bulldogs on Friday night, a couple of touches of class from Strange proved the difference and he is a player going places fast.<\/p>\n
