Josh Schuster<\/a> has revealed a mental health battle he's on the other side of was behind his up-and-down performances with Manly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Schuster was released from his $800,000 a year contract<\/a> in April. He did not feature in first grade at all this year, and played four NSW Cup games for Blacktown. <\/p>\n

He made only 15 appearances for the Sea Eagles last year, and battled constant questions surrounding his fitness and weight.<\/p>\n

And off the field, he was dealing with his own demons few knew of.<\/p>\n

"I've been battling with some stuff over the past two years," he told The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That was the main reason I was inconsistent in my performance. The last year I wasn't really there mentally. I was battling with some stuff off the field that wasn't making me happy going on the field.<\/p>\n

"I've got it off my chest now, so I'm a lot better mentally. I'm a lot happier, mentally I'm in a better headspace. When I'm at my fittest and happiest, that's when I start playing my best footy. If anything, I can't wait to be back and prove to myself I can do it."<\/p>\n

Schuster's management have already fielded interest from several NRL clubs, but the utility has vowed to take the rest of the 2024 season off with an eye to next year. <\/p>\n

Schuster has begun a fresh fitness regime, and hopes to begin pre-season weighing about 110kg and become a permanent halves player. <\/p>\n

Still only 23, Schuster said walking out of Manly lifted a weight off his shoulders.<\/p>\n

"I walked out of the building with a smile on my face; I've never been happier," Schuster said.<\/p>\n

"It was a big weight off my shoulders. At the end of the day, we're human. Hearing and seeing all the [criticism directed at me], it hurts you and your family.<\/p>\n

"After, I felt a big weight off my shoulders; a big relief, if anything. I know it's a lot of money, but I don't play footy for money. I play for the love of the game.<\/p>\n
