North Queensland<\/a> coach Todd Payten<\/a> has \ufeffgiven an honest assessment of his coaching performance following the Cowboys' "ugly" Magic Round victory over the Rabbitohs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Coming off the back of a five-game losing streak, both teams were eager to snatch a win – with Payten seemingly unimpressed by his side's efforts during the the thrilling final minutes of the clash.<\/p>\n

Speaking to media after the match, Payten reflected on the Cowboys' poor performances in recent weeks, attributing their lack of success to his own coaching style.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys started their season strong, winning four from five, but fell in a slump in round six.<\/p>\n

"I've been consumed by the job more than I have ever before.. so make of that what you will," Payten said.<\/p>\n

"It's just the thought process that goes into it. Trying to find ways and reasons, looking at what you're doing, the program, the messaging, yourself, the team, their connection… all that stuff is part of it.<\/p>\n

"[I question myself] always. It's the first place you've gotta look.<\/p>\n

"My language, my demeanour, my energy, and my messaging to the team is really important."<\/p>\n

The 45-year-old revealed his inability to get over the Cowboys' defeats in recent weeks has begun to take a toll on the team, claiming it can take up to 48 hours for him to move on.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I've been more conscious of not dragging my feet for a couple of days," he said.<\/p>\n

"I need to get over the loss quicker than I have. 24 to 36 hours, some weeks it's been up to 48 hours.<\/p>\n

"I don't think that's helpful."<\/p>\n

After weeks of scrutiny and questions for the under-pressure coach, Payten said he was relieved for the club and its players to finally be able to "take a breath."<\/p>\n

"If you asked me at the start of the day and the start of last week if I would take the two points anyway it came, I would agree with you, and that's how it worked out," he said.<\/p>\n

"We played some handy footy at the start\u2026 and got a 12-nil lead but we let them get back into the competition with some poor decisions. We just had to scrap and scrape and come away with an ugly win.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Don't get me wrong, I'm happy… Everyone can take a breath now.<\/p>\n

"As much as we don't want to admit it, it's always a bitter feeling off the back of a losing streak at training.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Little errors and different parts of the game end up seeming bigger than they actually are. This will allow us to all take a breath and focus on our next job."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
