A young Aussie surfer<\/a> has been caught up in a bizarre case of poor sportsmanship at the World Junior Championships in El Salvador.<\/p>\n

It wasn't enough to stop the Aussies \u2013 nicknamed the Irukandjis \u2013 from winning the title for the first time in over a decade.<\/p>\n

In the dying moments of the U\/18 women's repechage, Aussie Willow Hardy (blue) was lying fourth and needed a score of 2.4 to progress.<\/p>\n

She took a wave with 50 seconds left on the clock, but was sensationally blocked by Portugal's Erica Maximo (white), who's compatriot would be eliminated if Hardy scored well enough to progress.<\/p>\n

The Portuguese surfer appeared to try to grab at and even push Hardy off her board. Hardy managed to stay upright and scored a 2.7 to progress.<\/p>\n

Both Portuguese surfers were eliminated. Irukandjis coach Pete Duncan protested Maximo's move, and she was disqualified.<\/p>\n

"While there is a tactical element to competitive surfing, there is no place for unsporting conduct," Duncan told News Corp.<\/p>\n

"We are incredibly proud of the way Willow remained composed in what was an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous situation."<\/p>\n

Maximo later took to Instagram to issue an apology. She described the incident as "not (her) brightest moment".<\/p>\n

"I committed an interference on the Australian surfer's wave and in an unsportsmanlike manner.<\/p>\n

"That was not my goal. I just wanted to help my team but I recognise my mistake and I am here to apologise, especially to the Australian surfer, the Australian team and the ISA.<\/p>\n

"These situations can't happen.<\/p>\n

"I realised the repercussions of this incident and assure you all that something like this will never happen again."<\/p>\n

Gold medals to Dane Henry (U\/18 mens) and Ziggy Aloha Mackenzie (U\/16 girls) helped the Aussies claim the overall title.<\/p>\n
