In the annual racing driver merry-go-round, journalists spend most of their time figuring out who will end up where on the grid.<\/p>\n

On the odd occasion, a driver might inadvertently let slip \u2014 much like Callum Ilott did at the latest round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.<\/p>\n

After winning the Spa 6 Hour in Belgium, the Briton said a little too much in his post-race interview.<\/p>\n

Ilott, who had been linked to a drive in the Indianapolis 500 with McLaren, chuckled as he realised his mistake.<\/p>\n

"I've got to catch a flight\u2026 across the continent for a non-confirmed race," he said.<\/p>\n

"Another big one. When is this out by the way?"<\/p>\n

The presenter replied, "Umm, quite soon".<\/p>\n

He laughed, "Sweet. No, it's all good. Unconfirmed. Could be anything. NASCAR!".<\/p>\n

Just two days later McLaren confirmed Ilott will contest the Indianapolis 500, dubbed the Greatest Spectacle In Racing, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.<\/p>\n

Ilott was dumped by Juncos Hollinger Racing at the end of the 2023 IndyCar season and moved to the FIA World Endurance Championship with Jota Sport.<\/p>\n

A successful return to IndyCar could put him firmly in the frame for a full-time return in 2025, openings allowing.<\/p>\n

It will be the second start for Ilott at McLaren this year after finishing 13th in St Petersburg as an injury fill-in for David Malukas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The team has since split with Malukas due to an undefined timeline on his recovery from a broken wrist.<\/p>\n

"It is any driver's dream to race in the Indianapolis 500, and I'd like to extend a thank you to Zak (Brown, McLaren CEO), Gavin (Ward, CEO) and Tony (Kanaan) for making this happen," said Ilott in the team's official announcement.<\/p>\n

"I'm grateful to step into this race with a familiar car and a familiar team now in Arrow McLaren.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"While our April open test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was shortened by weather, the runs we did have were productive.<\/p>\n

"I feel comfortable with the team and know that we can come together throughout the Month of May to put our best foot forward come race day."<\/p>\n

The Indianapolis 500 begins in earnest on Wednesday with the first practice at the oval.<\/p>\n
