Stephen Hoiles has described Australia's Super Rugby Pacific<\/a> academy system as "flawed" while questioning NSW's player management amid a horrific injury toll.<\/a><\/p>\n

Former Wallabies forward Hoiles is now a promising coach who led Randwick to a drought breaking Shute Shield \ufefftitle last year.<\/p>\n

The Stan Sport pundit also won the 2021 Major League Rugby title with the LA Giltinis as an assistant coach to now Waratahs boss Darren Coleman.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Between Two Posts<\/em>, Hoiles \ufeffsaid NSW's woes – sitting last with three rounds to play and missing 17 injured players – should not solely be sheeted back to the club's coaching staff.<\/p>\n

He said the injury crisis was compounded by a lack of cohesion and common sense in the play\ufeffer pathway model.<\/p>\n

"The problem is, when you get injuries in key positions, they've had heaps in their front row," Hoiles said.<\/p>\n

"They knew this three or four weeks ago. They knew (injured hooker Julian) Heaven was going to get himself in a position where he'd probably push the boundary because they're playing too many minutes.<\/p>\n

"When you don't have the depth – that's the thing. There's got to be an element where it's player safety – like they've got to try and win a game, I get it. But there are enough markers to tell you that (injured prop) Harry's (Johnson-Holmes) probably red flagging somewhere.<\/p>\n

"There's enough metrics in this day and age to go 'he is close to an injury.' And it's simple with front rowers.<\/p>\n

"When you're normally playing 40, 50, maybe 60 minutes, then all of a sudden, for the previous month, you're going 70, 75, 68, 72, you're pushing them, you're red lining them. And that's the risk they take."<\/p>\n

Hoiles acknowledged that the casualty ward meant the Waratahs were somewhat forced to play their available players big minutes but that decision had blown up further in their faces.<\/p>\n

Johnson-Holmes is out for the season after rupturing an Achilles tendon for the second time, incredibly leaving the Waratahs without all 10 of their contracted front rowers.<\/p>\n

\ufeffAdding to the crisis, Pone Fa'amausili's loan stint will end early with the Wallabies prop heading back to the Rebels to cover for Taniela Tupou's head knock.<\/p>\n

Argentina prop \ufeffEnrique Pieretto has joined on loan from the Glasgow Warriors and is likely to feature against the Force in Perth on Saturday.<\/p>\n

"The annoying bit for myself is that all of the players that are coming through, none of them had anything to do with the academy system all year. They've got (Australia under) 20s now, some of their (under) 20s players could have been brought back, might have to be brought back this year," Hoiles said.<\/p>\n

"I just find – bringing players through the club system, while it's great and it's nice to reward them – like Heaven as an example – they're getting set up, they're becoming high risk themselves…<\/p>\n

"The fact that our academy system is generally an under-20 system, that's flawed because we need 24, 26-year-olds ready to play Super Rugby."<\/p>\n

NSW Rugby boss Paul Doorn told the Sydney Morning Herald that there would be a review into the spate of serious injuries.\ufeff<\/a><\/p>\n

"They\ufeff did a review after four weeks," Hoiles scoffed.<\/p>\n

"Like it's not just coaches. What's a review going to do? Maybe Rugby Australia need to know why but Rugby Australia have had a high number of Achilles issues (with the Wallabies), so there's something in the program.<\/p>\n

"It's probably our fifth or sixth snapped Achilles in the last two years."<\/p>\n

With three games to go, the generous eight of 12 teams finals format means the Waratahs still have plenty to play for, sitting just five points off the playoff pace.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Coleman is off contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to earn a new deal as Michael Cheika looms as a possible saviour.<\/p>\n

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark," Morgan Turinui said.<\/p>\n
