Indianapolis 500<\/a> winner Marcus Ericsson is frustrated IndyCar<\/a> race officials could pull a repeat of last year's controversial finish that deprived him of victory.<\/p>\n

Ericsson led the 107th running of the Greatest Spectacle In Racing<\/a> when an unprecedented call was made.<\/p>\n

Coming to the green flag with four laps to go, cars wrecked at the back of the pack and the yellow flag was drawn.<\/p>\n

The field completed a lap before the red flag was thrown. Given the cars crossed the start-finish line in the pit lane, that left two laps remaining.<\/p>\n

Typically, there is at least one lap given to warm up before going green again. However, with two laps to go, a race restart wasn't feasible with the included warm-up lap and cars would have taken the chequered flag to complete lap 200.<\/p>\n

Instead, cars rolled out of the pit lane and restarted on lap 199, setting up a one-lap dash to the flag.<\/p>\n

Ericsson lost the lead to Josef Newgarden on the last lap and finished second for Chip Ganassi Racing.<\/p>\n

Nearly a year later, the Swede is still upset over the extraordinary circumstances and the lack of clarity around a potential repeat situation.<\/p>\n

The decision is in stark contrast to the scenes of 2020 when IndyCar defended itself for not bringing out the red flag on lap 196 due to safety concerns, nerfing a grandstand finish.<\/p>\n

Now at Andretti Global, former F1 driver Ericsson said he has been given indication about the cut-off point for a red flag to be thrown.<\/p>\n

It's a given that the leader on lap 199 or lap 200 will be the winner. Anything earlier than that leaves the door wide open for another one-lap dash.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The explanation is that in the last 15 laps, all bets are off," Ericsson said ahead of practice, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"Whatever they want to do, they can do. That's what they're saying. They say they'll do whatever it takes to finish under green, and I just think it would be nice for everybody to have a lap where everyone knows (there won't be a red).\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I agree; we want to have a green finish, but sometimes, it's a yellow finish. It's happened so many times in the history of this race, right? It's not like it's unique to last year, like, 'Oh, it's going to be a yellow finish! That's a disaster!' This has happened so many times."<\/p>\n

If there's one thing set in stone, it's the distance. Unlike NASCAR with its overtime rule that extends the race beyond its set distance, the Indianapolis 500 will top out at 200 laps.<\/p>\n

Ericsson joked, "They might even do it NASCAR-style and add a couple laps."<\/p>\n
