C\ufeffaroline Wilson<\/a> believes the AFL has a lot to learn after the tragic death of former GWS and Fremantle player Cam McCarthy<\/a><\/p>\n

Western Australia police on Friday confirmed the death, with McCarthy \ufefffound unresponsive at a home in Perth's south.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old's death is being treated as non-suspicious.<\/p>\n

McCarthy was drafted with pick 14 in 2013 and played 21 games for the Giants in Sydney, but requested a trade home to \ufeffPerth due to homesickness.<\/p>\n

He was granted the trade and joined Fremantle at the end of 2016.<\/p>\n

\ufeffMcCarthy was the club's leading goal kicker in 2017 and played 49 games for the Dockers in total before being cut at the end of 2020.<\/p>\n

Now, Wilson is calling on all AFL clubs and the league to consider \ufeffintroducing processes that will aid their support of players coming through the AFL system.<\/p>\n

"I think … screening processes with players (needs to start) coming into clubs," Wilson said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Monday night.\ufeff<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

"I'm sorry, but Freo is one of those (clubs) going backwards.<\/p>\n

"In the case of players like Cam McCarthy\ufeff, he was better off when he was playing. But it's chicken and egg. He couldn't keep up with the rigors and demands of the game, so he had to leave and after that, his life just got more and more untenable."<\/p>\n

But Wilson is confident that McCarthy's tragic death is not at all related to the AFL's under-scrutiny illicit drugs policy.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I don't think the illicit drugs policy is to blame for these situations, but I do think… well, clearly the AFL (is) reviewing it now," she said.<\/p>\n

There was also discussion from GWS and Dockers officials around if they had done enough to support McCarthy and what they can do differently in the future.<\/p>\n

"I know after the (GWS) Essendon game, there was a function for Cal Ward (300 games) and there was a lot of discussion from past and present Giants bosses and players about, did they do the right thing, could they have done better?" she said.<\/p>\n

"We heard Dermott Brereton himself (saying) should he have made a phone call (to McCarthy)?<\/p>\n

"Similar questions at Freo, but it's nobody's fault.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

\ufeffBoth of the former forward's clubs conducted emotional tributes to McCarthy over their round nine matches.<\/p>\n

GWS forward Jesse Hogan, who played with McCarthy while the pair were at Fremantle, kissed his black armband after kicking a goal as a tribute to his mate<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n
