New South Wales<\/a> star Jessica Sergis<\/a> has declared the Sky Blues as "the underdogs" ahead of the 2024 women's State of Origin<\/a> series, as the team seeks revenge after last year's defeat due to points differential.<\/p>\n

Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder made some significant changes to the squad<\/a>, naming a new halves pairing and two debutants called up to the team.<\/p>\n

According to star centre Sergis\ufeff, the changes will help NSW flip the narrative of the Maroons<\/a> success at Suncorp, where the Blues have lost nine of their past 11 matches. <\/p>\n

"Getting the win by a couple of points last year [makes them the favourites] and they've got the trophy, so they're going to think that they're the favourites going in," she said. <\/p>\n

"They can think that, but we're going to focus on us and see what happens. We've been to Townsville and that was intense, but [Brisbane] fuels us even more.<\/p>\n

"Coming in as the underdogs is great for us because we can just focus on ourselves and ignore the outside noise, so they can say what they want to say.<\/p>\n

"It fuels me a little bit more if I hear that Queensland chant \u2013 it fires me up \u2013 so I'm not worried. If we can go up there and dominate game one, which is our plan, we'll be very happy, especially to do it against the odds up at Suncorp."<\/p>\n

The women's Origin opener will mark the beginning of Magic Round in the NRL, with the Origin series commencing its inaugural three-game format.<\/p>\n

Despite the Maroons having the home side advantage, a victory for NSW would release the pressure slightly for the Sky Blues heading into Game II.<\/p>\n

"If you think about the bigger picture, it was one-all and it was just a point thing (that decided it)," Sergis said.<\/p>\n

"At the end of the day, they've got the trophy and it's sitting in sunny Queensland. <\/p>\n

"Our goal is to start strong, start fast, and hopefully get 3-0."<\/p>\n

\ufeffNewcastle backrower and Sky Blues star Yasmin Clysdale revealed she expects to face a hostile crowd, similar to that of which attended Game II in Newcastle last year.<\/p>\n

"It's wild and I think that I love it, I thrive in those environments," she said.<\/p>\n

"I love being the underdog and I think we've got a really good group together and really connected and I think that's what's going to get us through some of those hostile environments. It's an iconic stadium, but I think it fuels the fire of it.<\/p>\n

"We are able to start the series up there and hopefully \u2026 I just want to smash them up there as well and really like to give it to them. <\/p>\n

"I think we have the team to do it, so that's super exciting.<\/p>\n

Clysdale said the competition was ready to expand to three games, \ufeffdeclaring that the Sky Blues are ready for the challenge.<\/p>\n

"I think our game was ready for the three games and I think only having one year of two games really put into perspective where the women's game is," she said.<\/p>\n
