P\ufeffhil Gould<\/a> has admitted his confusion over David Fifita<\/a>'s move to the Sydney Roosters<\/a>, claiming it "made more sense" for the back-rower to join the Panthers.<\/p>\n

In a bombshell coup, Fifita will head to Bondi next year on a four-year deal worth $3.3 million after deciding not to take up an option at the Gold Coast Titans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old will join a star-studded roster at the Chooks, who are losing a number of key players but still have a plethora of representative stars at the helm next year.<\/p>\n

However, the decision to sign Fifita has been questioned by Gould, who admitted he \ufeff"understands the frustration" coming from off-contract star Angus Crichton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I really don't know … it made more sense for me for the Panthers to be signing him," he said on Nine's 100% Footy.<\/em><\/p>\n

"Angus Crichton playing at left edge, which is where I assume Fifita intends to play. I just don't know if Fifita is a Rooster-type player \u2026 he's gonna find the Roosters work ethic and commitment to defence a whole new ball game.<\/p>\n

"He's going to have to adjust himself to fit into what they want. I just don't know that it was a good fit for them, whereas Angus Crichton is tried and tested in that role.<\/p>\n

"I can understand Angus' frustration and I just couldn't make sense of it. I'm not saying Fifita isn't a valuable buy somewhere, I just couldn't see why the Roosters needed him."<\/p>\n

Crichton remains unsigned for 2025 and beyond, with Nine reporter Michael Chammas revealing a number of rival NRL clubs are interested in acquiring his services.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, Sitili Tupouniua and Siua Wong both lined up in reserve grade, with Crichton and Nat Butcher starting in the back-row and his brother Egan on the bench.<\/p>\n

Billy Slater<\/a> was another expert to question the move from Trent Robinson, but is adamant the experienced Roosters coach will have a plan long-term for Fifita.<\/p>\n

"They have a luxury in back-rowers," he said on Nine's Billy Slater Podcast.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

"You think of the Butcher boys, Sitli Tupouniua, Siua Wong and Angus Crichton, who is off-contract and probably the form back-rower of the competition at the moment.<\/p>\n

\"Roosters<\/p>\n

"There's only two back-row positions, what do they do there? It will be interesting to see, do any of those players shift into the middle in the absence of Waera-Hargreaves?<\/p>\n

"It's an interesting one \u2026 I'm sure Trent Robinson and his team have got a plan."<\/p>\n

Tupouniua and Nat Butcher are both signed until the end of 2027, while young gun Wong is signed to the Tricolours until the end of 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
