Kane Cornes<\/a> has defended his recent criticism of West Coast No.1 Draft pick Harley Reid<\/a>, after he labelled his training a "concern" due to late cramping in their round eight loss<\/a><\/p>\n

It comes after young Collingwood star Nick Daicos also cramped in the final minutes of the Pies 66-point win over the Eagles<\/a> just a week later.<\/p>\n

Cornes expressed his concern with Reid's fitness after the Essendon clash, fearful that he is unable to impact games when he is required to – unlike Daicos, who kicked the winning goal against Carlton to seal a six-point victory for his Pies<\/a><\/p>\n

"I understand there's a couple of years extra on there, but Nick was doing this from day one," Cornes said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> at the time.<\/p>\n

"If (Reid) wants to be the best, if he wants to be Nick Daicos, he's got to have his training standards to (that) level.<\/p>\n

\"Daicos\"<\/p>\n

"That was a concern for me, to see how out on his feet he was in a game that was nowhere near as high pressure, after a week off, with five minutes to go that he had to come off the ground."<\/p>\n

\ufeffNow, Cornes has explained his comments after Daicos admitted he experienced the same cramping issues as Reid in round nine.<\/p>\n

"I just want to highlight why I said the comments that I said last week," Cornes said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

"Reid couldn't run with six minutes to go. The difference being\ufeff that Nick Daicos absolutely ran himself into the ground for 36 touches and seven clearances in a best-on-ground performance.<\/p>\n

"Harley Reid took a big mark, but hardly touched it and was a midfield-forward a lot."<\/p>\n

Reid matched up on Daicos directly in their clash, but Cornes noticed the Pie's workrate was leaps and bounds above the West Coast star\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"Are you telling me he (Reid) can't review this vision (against Daicos) and\ufeff go 'this is how hard I need to get to, to work, to be a great player'?" Cornes asked.<\/p>\n

Cornes highlighted a moment of play where Reid couldn't keep track of Daicos, who ran out of the pack and received the ball wide on the wing heading into the Pies' forward 50, with Reid "nowhere to be seen".\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Watch \ufeffNick Daicos make him look like a fool here. Where's Reid? Nowhere to be seen," he said.<\/p>\n

"If you want to be critical of my comments, go back and review this vision and ask yourself 'is that a legitimate coaching technique that you would use if you want to be great?'."<\/p>\n

Matthew Lloyd questioned Cornes' comments, defending Reid, who has played just a handful of games after being drafted at the end of 2023.<\/p>\n

The midfielder has also been subject to immense external pressure, labelled Western Australia's footballing saviour<\/a>\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"What we don't understand is that this is a kid in his seventh game," Lloyd said.<\/p>\n

"If you looked at (Patrick) Dangerfield, (Nat) Fyfe and (Marcus) Bontempelli\ufeff, they would have been doing exactly the same thing."<\/p>\n

Cornes combated Lloyd's comments, asking when he believes Reid can actually be coached and not allowed to be left to naturally learn the game as his game grows.<\/p>\n

"Does that mean you can't coach them until when? Is it 40 games, is it three years?" Cornes asked.<\/p>\n

"At least give them (some time)\ufeff, an inside midfielder," Lloyd said.<\/p>\n

Caroline Wilson also expressed her fears surrounding the intense media pressure the 19-year-old has faced, that began well before he was even drafted to the Eagles.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I hope we don't sit back in a few years' time and feel a bit bad about how the whole industry treated Harley Reid," she said.<\/p>\n
