Billy Slater<\/a> says the NRL<\/a> is going through a "teething process" with kick pressure rulings after Melbourne<\/a>'s Harry Grant<\/a> was brutally sin binned for making contact with Dan Atkinson.<\/p>\n

Issues around kick pressure plays have been a prominent talking point this season with multiple controversial penalties awarded, and most recently players given marching orders for mild contact.<\/p>\n

Grant was sin binned after making harmless contact with the Sharks<\/a> kicker, with the pair's legs brushing together, in what ended up becoming a match-turning call.<\/p>\n

The Sharks were trailing by \ufeffsix before the incident and went on to win the match 25-18.<\/p>\n

Slater said he believes the referees "have got a really tough job" to ensure new rules are policed consistently across the competition.<\/p>\n

"At the moment, the referees have got a really tough job because when the game changes something and they want to police something, they've got to go hard at it," Slater said on Nine's The Billy Slater Podcast<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"It's like every little touch around it – it's like the kick pressure. As soon as you touch a kicker it was a penalty.<\/p>\n

"Whereas now they're starting to get back to finding that happy medium where players, if they take too long to kick the ball and they get tackled, well it's play on.<\/p>\n

\"Harry<\/p>\n

"I think we will find that happy medium.<\/p>\n

"I think we are just going through a bit of a teething process at the moment around the interpretation around the kicker."<\/p>\n

Grant was charged with a grade one dangerous contact charge and can opt to pay a $1000 fine with an early guilty plea.<\/p>\n

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy<\/a> said the decision to send the Storm skipper to the bin has set the mark for the competition.<\/p>\n

"I think with any rules all we have got is consistency," Bellamy said in the post-game press conference.<\/p>\n

"That's the mark now. You touch his leg, doesn't matter how hard, you go to the bin.<\/p>\n

"Obviously you can't bump their legs. So you go in over the top and wrap them up and just hope you don't hit them late.<\/p>\n

"I don't know, like Harry wasn't even looking. At the end of the day I suppose he has got to take that responsibility as in, okay look where you are going and try and avoid making contact there.<\/p>\n

"But at the end of the day, that's out of my control and if that's what they want to do."<\/p>\n

Grant declared that he had "no intention" of hurting Atkinson, calling for the NRL to not remove kick pressure plays from the game.<\/p>\n

"I was a bit shocked [by the decision] but can't change it no," the Storm skipper said.<\/p>\n

"I had no intention of going in with any intent to hurt Atkinson. I just went to put kick pressure on, which is a big part of the game and you can't lose it.<\/p>\n

"We don't want to lose it. If you look I was going to put kick pressure on and looked away to take myself away from him to not make any contact.<\/p>\n
