Leigh Matthews<\/a> \ufeffhas called on the AFL<\/a> to bring back its rules review committee to ensure rule interpretations remain in line with what supporters and the wider football community want.<\/p>\n

On \ufeffFriday night, Geelong coach Chris Scott<\/a> used his post-match press conference to address the state of the holding the ball rule<\/a>, including when and how advantage should be played after his side was denied a crucial late goal in their six-point loss to Port Adelaide.<\/p>\n

In response to Scott's five-minute tirade, Matthews urged the league to reintroduce its previous rules review committee which was scrapped several years ago.<\/p>\n

In its original form, the committee saw six members of the football community meet with the game's umpires and administration heads at the AFL on a few occasions throughout the season to discuss umpiring issues and rulings.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWho advises the umpires and [head of officiating] Steve McBurney about what we want the philosophy of our umpiring to be?," Matthews told Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"That question\ufeff to me is still an open one.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Maybe the rules committee should be revived \u2014 it's been about eight years since they sacked it."<\/p>\n

Matthews argued that the committee could be a valuable tool for setting the yardstick for umpiring decisions while managing the expectations of the football community.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWhen Hayden Kennedy was head of umpiring and he was part of the group, it was a really helpful thing to make sure we link between what we \u2014 we as in the football community \u2014 want from the umpiring philosophy as opposed to who and what at the AFL is being put into practice," he said.<\/p>\n

Matthews then put forward panellist Jimmy Bartel<\/a> as a potential member, claiming the Geelong legend would be an "ideal" inclusion.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI've got some thoughts on the way the game should be played out," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

The current GWS Giants director then\ufeff suggested that more feedback from the umpires was needed to be communicated.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt would be good to ask the umpires if a [contentious rule] is a difficult rule to adjudicate," he said.<\/p>\n

"So if you \ufeffwant to introduce a new rule … let's ask the guys who have got to pay it. Can you see it? Can you pay it? Are we asking too much? Should we be deleting a rule? What rule do you think would help free up stoppages?<\/p>\n
