Jimmy Bartel<\/a> and Leigh Matthews<\/a> have weighed in on the independent doctor debate after Geelong<\/a>'s medical team elected to leave Jeremy Cameron<\/a> to play out the remaining minutes of the game against Port Adelaide.<\/p>\n

Cameron fell heavily from a marking contest late in the fourth quarter, however, despite receiving medical attention from training staff remained on the field until the final seconds.<\/p>\n

Geelong confirmed Cameron will not play in next week's clash with the Gold Coast Suns<\/a> despite passing the head injury assessment (HIA) on Friday night, stating that the 31-year-old experienced delayed concussion symptoms on Saturday\ufeff morning.<\/p>\n

"As per the AFL<\/a>'s concussion guidelines, Geelong medical staff immediately attended Cameron and conducted an HIA on ground, where he reported no symptoms and satisfied all AFL requirements," Geelong said in a statement.<\/p>\n

"After further review of the video footage, and in consultation with the spotters in the ARC, it was decided there was no criteria to remove Cameron immediately from the field for further assessment.<\/p>\n

"As is the process following a match, Cameron was monitored and assessed again on Saturday morning, where he reported some concussive symptoms on repeat SCAT6, and a diagnosis of delayed concussion was made."<\/p>\n

The sequence of on-field events has left many questioning Geelong's medical team's decision, with Bartel revealing he believes the star would've been taken off the field had it occurred in the opening half.<\/p>\n

"It is highly likely he would've gone off but he's aware of the game," he said on Nine's Footy Furnace<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I don't think the doctor or medical team could've done much more."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Bartel said he does not believe the ruling, if changed to include independent doctors or concussion spotters, will be effective.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"I don't know how you're going to tell a player [to come off the field], especially someone like Jeremy Cameron who is there [to win] and wouldn't want to [leave the field," he said. <\/p>\n

\ufeffFollowing an inquest into the death of former Richmond<\/a> midfielder Shane Tuck, Victorian State Coroner Judge John Cain recommended the AFL implement the use of independent doctors and allow concussion spotters to direct clubs to remove players from the field for a HIA assessment during matches.<\/p>\n

In response, the AFL announced they would consider bringing in independent doctors to all matches in order to assist club medical staff with identifying and assessing head injuries but have yet to announce any further progress with the decision.<\/p>\n

Matthews said he believes Geelong's actions will advantage calls for the debate, however, was also unsure what the process would entail.<\/p>\n

"Certainly the calls for the independent doctor will be advantaged by this," he said.<\/p>\n

"We don't want to criticise doctors but they are human beings. Sometimes they make the right decisions and sometimes they are incorrect.<\/p>\n

"If the Geelong doctor tried \ufeffto take him off the field and Jeremy just wouldn't go off, I don't know what you would do next."\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
