S\ufefft Kilda<\/a> coach Ross Lyon<\/a> has slammed the AFL's restrictions on runners and their ability to deliver on-field messages.<\/p>\n

It comes after the Saints fell to their fourth loss in five weeks, going down to Hawthorn by five points on Saturday afternoon in Tasmania.<\/p>\n

On the eve of the 2024 season, the league confirmed they would relax rules around runners and the amount of times they can enter the ground during a match.<\/p>\n

\ufeffIt came after clubs expressed their desire to have more messages moved through the ground.<\/p>\n

The AFL then increased the rule to allow runners on the ground four times a quarter, plus after every goal kicked.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Despite the positive change, Lyon feels it's simply still not enough.<\/p>\n

The Saints leader even went as far as to declare he feels restricted in the coaches box.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"We're like neutered dogs, we can sit there and see stuff and you can't fix it," Lyon said post match.<\/p>\n

"It's not an excuse and we've had a lot of tight games, but we get four messages a quarter and with three minutes to go you can't send the runner.<\/p>\n

Lyon explained that he had more freedom with his runners when he previously coached Fremantle (2012-2019) and before that, St Kilda (2007-2011).<\/p>\n

"In my previous iterations (as coach), you could use the runner almost at will," he said.<\/p>\n

"You see things you want to fix and things you want to do, and people say 'kick more goals and you get those opportunities', but it's still limited.<\/p>\n

"From my end I find it incredibly frustrating and I think there'd be a lot of coaches (who agree)."<\/p>\n

Lyon, whose Saints sit 3-6 after nine rounds and are floundering in 14th\ufeff, says he doesn't have a clear solution to the problem, but knows he requires "more than four" chances a quarter to run messages out to his team.<\/p>\n

"I don't know what the (ideal) number is, but I'm tipping it's more than four (times for a runner each quarter)," he said.<\/p>\n

St Kilda's poor record makes finals look like a distant hope, unless they can turn it around when they face the eighth-placed Dockers at Marvel Stadium in round 10.<\/p>\n

Lyon still holds out hope, but admitted his side isn't gelling how he thought they could at the start of the year.<\/p>\n

"I don't like how we're playing at the minute," Lyon said.<\/p>\n

"I spoke to them at half-time \u2026 I said we're better than that.<\/p>\n

"I'd like us to have a bit more than we're displaying at the minute. It doesn't sit very comfortably.\ufeff"<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
