Melbourne great Garry Lyon has called on the AFL<\/a> to require players to undertake a head injury assessment (HIA) after suffering heavy head knocks.<\/p>\n

It comes after Geelong<\/a> forward Jeremy Cameron<\/a> entered concussion protocols after suffering delayed symptoms from a marking contest fall in the Cats' six-point loss to Port Adelaide<\/a> at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night.<\/p>\n

Cameron was attended to by a Cats trainer after the fall in the fourth term but brushed them off and continued to play, without coming from the ground for an assessment.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Cats were attempting a mighty comeback from a near 50-point deficit, with Cameron evidently keen to stay involved in the play.<\/p>\n

Now, Geelong has confirmed that the 2022 premiership forward would miss their round 10 clash against Gold Coast on Thursday in Darwin.<\/p>\n

Cameron didn't suffer didn't immediate symptoms, but the club confirmed he was continually monitored into Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

"As further due diligence, and still with no concussive symptoms, Cameron undertook and completed a normal SCAT6 concussion assessment after the game," the Cats said via a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n

"As is the process following a match, Cameron was monitored and assessed again on Saturday morning, where he reported some concussive symptoms on repeat SCAT6 and a diagnosis of delayed concussion was made.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

The non-act has been questioned, with Lyon keen\ufeff to see more strength from club doctors and trainers to force a player from the ground to be assessed if their head knock has affected them in any way.<\/p>\n

"It's head knocks, concussions. It's about how do you recognise what's a dangerous head knock and what's not?," Lyon asked on Fox Footy post-game.<\/p>\n

"And when are you compelled to take a player off the ground and do some sort of a HIA test?"<\/p>\n

Lyon noted that the Cats doctor was keen to get the forward off the ground, but couldn't entice him to head to the bench for assessment.<\/p>\n

"The doctor \u2014 again, we're sitting in a studio \u2014 came out and looked like he was \u2014 I'm surmising that he wanted to get him off. There was about five minutes to go," Lyon said.<\/p>\n

"It looked like he wanted to get him off and do a test of some sort."<\/p>\n

Lyon admitted that he would have felt better if Cameron had come from the ground to be checked over.\ufeff<\/p>\n

It comes as \ufeffMelbourne midfielder Angus Brayshaw was forced to medically retire<\/a> on the eve of the 2024 season due to the head trauma he has suffered.<\/p>\n

Just weeks ago, Collingwood premiership defender Nathan Murphy\ufeff was also forced to retire<\/a> because of the long-term risk of further concussions and head trauma.<\/p>\n

Geelong has dropped their last two matches, heading up to Darwin in search of an eighth win on Thursday night.<\/p>\n
