Australia Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'Landys<\/a> says the fine handed to Bulldogs official Phil Gould<\/a> for calling the game "stupid"<\/a> was "not personal".\ufeff<\/p>\n

Gould confirmed this week he will challenge a $20,000 fine handed down by the NRL after criticising officials for disallowing a try to Wests Tigers hooker Apisai Koroisau.<\/p>\n

"Our game's so stupid. You can lose the ball over the line and it costs you 20m and seven tackles. Why?" Gould said of the incident on the show 100% Footy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I don't know because it's stupid. But I can just take a line drop out and it goes out on the full no consequence.<\/p>\n

"It's nothing at all \u2013 what sort of stupid game is this? Who sits and makes up these rules?<\/p>\n

"Api Koroisau try what the hell was that \u2013 what the hell was that? We are so stupid with our rules. Our game is stupid."<\/p>\n

The league hit back just days later, fining Gould – with half suspended – for contravening the rules.<\/p>\n

Gould had until Thursday to respond to the breach notice but has been granted an extension until the middle of the month and told Nine's Today<\/em> he will fight the charge.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>\ufeff, V'landys says there will be a more vigilant eye on perceived conflicts of interest in the game.<\/p>\n

"It was his use of the word 'stupid', that's what has got him into trouble," V'landys said.<\/p>\n

"This isn't personal at all. I get on very well with Gus. But we are the custodians of the game and we need to protect its credibility. We take that very seriously."<\/p>\n

After Gould responds to the breach notice, the game's governing body will work out how to deal with the issue.<\/p>\n

If Gould is not happy with the outcome then he can appeal and then take it to court if he chooses.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
