One of world motorsport's most well-known figures has sanctioned his own team for their part in a cheating scandal that rocked IndyCar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Team Penske conducted an internal review after it was found its drivers breached push-to-pass rules at the season opener, resulting in Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin being disqualified.<\/p>\n

Australia's Will Power was also implicated but because he did not use push-to-pass and only had the capacity to do so, he was docked 10 points from the drivers' standings.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Team Penske said it had "determined that there were significant failures in our processes and internal communications" and as a result suspended four key members of its team.<\/p>\n

Newgarden's race engineer Luke Mason and senior data engineer Robbie Atkinson have been suspended for the next two races.<\/p>\n

In addition, Team Penske managing director Ron Ruzewski and Team Penske president Tim Cindric have both been suspended for two races.<\/p>\n

"I recognise the magnitude of what occurred and the impact it continues to have on the sport to which I've dedicated so many decades," said the eponymous team owner Roger Penske.<\/p>\n

"Everyone at Team Penske along with our fans and business partners should know that I apologise for the errors that were made and I deeply regret them."<\/p>\n

Penske has been heavily criticised in the wake of the scandal<\/a> given he owns the IndyCar Series, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and a team in the series.<\/p>\n

IndyCar officials discovered an abnormality in the wake of the St Petersburg race and investigated the allegations independent of Penske.<\/p>\n

The sanctions are a significant blow to the team's championship aspirations and hopes of winning the Indianapolis 500.<\/p>\n

It will mean the team is without its most senior members for the crown jewel event on May 27.<\/p>\n

Tim Cindric was sanctioned because he has "accountability for all of Team Penske's operations".<\/p>\n

"For Ron and I as leaders of this team, it's not about what we did, it's about what we didn't do," he explained.<\/p>\n

"It is our responsibility to provide the Team and all our drivers with the right processes to ensure something like this can't happen.<\/p>\n

"For that, I apologise to Roger, our Team and everyone that supports us.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Our number one job is to protect and enhance the reputation of our brand and that of those that support us.<\/p>\n

"In that regard, as the overall leader, I failed, and I must raise my hand and be accountable with the others. This is a team, and in my position, it's the right thing to do."<\/p>\n
