Marathon<\/a> champion Eliud Kipchoge<\/a> says he received death threats following the shock death of fellow runner Kelvin Kiptum\ufeff<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Kiptum died at the age of \ufeff24 in February when the car he was travelling in crashed in Kenya, killing he and his coach.<\/p>\n

In October, Kiptum beat Kipchoge's world record when he ran the Chicago Marathon in 2:00:35<\/a>\ufeff.<\/p>\n

He was named World Athletics' men's out of stadia athlete of the year, but died two months later.<\/p>\n

Following the car crash a number of \ufefftheories emerged about the cause of the crash. Kiptum's father claimed several men had visited his house in the days leading up to the crash and were asking about his son's whereabouts.<\/p>\n

Other theories suggested Kipchoge was involved in the death out of jealousy.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old has now broken his silence on the ugly affair.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I received a lot of bad things," Kipchoge told BBC Sport Africa.<\/p>\n

"That they will burn the (training) camp, they will burn my investments in town, they will burn my house, they will burn my family.<\/p>\n

"It did not happen but that is how the world is."<\/p>\n

Kipchoge wasn't involved in Kiptum's death, but said as soon as he heard of the car crash he feared he would be linked to it.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I don't have power to go to police and tell them my life is in danger," Kipchoge said.<\/p>\n

"So my concern was actually to tell my family to be extra conscious and cautious.<\/p>\n

\"Kelvin<\/p>\n

"I started to call a lot of people. I got really scared of my children going to school and coming back.<\/p>\n

"Sometimes they bike around, but we had to stop them because you never know what will happen. We started to drop them [off] and pick them [up] in the evening.<\/p>\n

"My girl was in boarding school – that was positive that she had no access as far as social media is concerned – but it's tough for my boys to hear, 'Your dad has killed somebody'."<\/p>\n

Kiptum and Kipchoge would have been set to compete against one another at Paris 2024 in what loomed as one of the greatest marathon races ever.<\/p>\n
