Wallabies<\/a> coach Joe Schmidt has told Rebels<\/a> flyhalf Carter Gordon he remains in contention for a Wallabies call-up amid reports he's eying a code-switch.<\/p>\n

But in the same breath, Schmidt also suggested that should Gordon decide to make the switch, the Wallabies won't sorely miss him.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> reported Gordon's management had met with Gold Coast Titans representatives, although his $700,000 a year asking price \u2013 along with a distinct lack of league experience \u2013 has potentially soured the prospect.<\/p>\n

Off-contract at the end of the year, Gordon faces increased uncertainty given the precarious financial situation of his Melbourne Rebels squad<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I had a chat with Carter much earlier in the season, and one of the things is that Carter is competing for a Wallabies spot \u2013 just like a number of the other 10s," Schmidt said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"There are a number of 10s \u2013 Tom Lynagh did really well last week, Ben Donaldson's been going well and Noah Lolesio is the most consistent of the kickers, certainly at goal.<\/p>\n

"I'd love Carter to stay and to be in the mix for the Wallabies, but if he doesn't then I'm excited about working with whoever we do select in that position."<\/p>\n

Gordon has played eight Tests for the Wallabies, but was dropped during the World Cup by former coach Eddie Jones.<\/p>\n

Rugby will lose Mark Nawaqanitawase to the Roosters at the end of the season, while the Dragons have been linked to star outside back Jordan Petaia.<\/p>\n

Schmidt said the uncertainty surrounding the Rebels had left him "as frustrated as anyone", especially given the increased competitiveness of the Australian teams this Super Rugby season.<\/p>\n

"I can only control what I can control, and that is trying to observe and build relationships with some of those players," Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

"Depending on what happens, I just want them to stay in Australia, be available, and be keen to put the gold jersey on."<\/p>\n
