McLaren<\/a> has released David Malukas from his IndyCar<\/a> contract in a devastating blow to the 22-year-old's career.<\/p>\n

In early February, Malukas suffered a mountain bike accident and underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his dislocated left wrist.<\/p>\n

The injury in the lead-up to the 2024 season has kept him sidelined as a result amid a prolonged recovery.<\/p>\n

After the surgery, the team had hoped Malukas would be fit for the Long Beach race.<\/p>\n

The two-time IndyCar podium finisher has missed all four races this year and his absence triggered a clause in his contract allowing McLaren to split with the driver.<\/p>\n

Exactly when Malukas might be able to return to driving remains unclear.<\/p>\n

This year was to be his third in the IndyCar Series after two strong seasons with Dale Coyne Racing.<\/p>\n

"The past three months have been challenging," said Malukas.<\/p>\n

"I felt privileged to have had the opportunity to drive for Arrow McLaren and regret that it never materialised.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I would have loved to have continued representing the team and its partners going forward. They have been good, and I appreciate all they have done for me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I've done everything possible to speed up the rehab process\u2014treatments, physiotherapy, strength training\u2014but my recovery has taken longer than anticipated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Every injury is different, and every body heals at a different pace. I'll turn my full attention to getting back to 100 per cent and then prove that I am ready and able to compete to win."\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Malukas' absence, his seat has been filled by Callum Ilott at St Petersburg and Thermal across the first two events and Theo Pourchaire at Long Beach and Barber.<\/p>\n

Exactly who will replace Malukas for the rest of the season remains unclear.<\/p>\n

Ilott has commitments in the FIA World Endurance Championship with Team Jota while Pourchaire has clashes with his Super Formula program in Japan with Team Impul.<\/p>\n

According to RACER, Ilott is top of McLaren's pile of available drivers to fill the void, but there are a few clashes with his sports car program.<\/p>\n

Although Malukas cannot race now, there should be demand for his services ahead of the 2025 season.<\/p>\n
