Kane Cornes<\/a> believes St Kilda<\/a> coach Ross Lyon<\/a> isn't being criticised harshly enough after his side's dismal start to 2024.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Saints have only recorded two wins in seven games, over 16th-placed Richmond and also Collingwood.<\/p>\n

They have now lost three games on the trot heading into their round eight clash against North Melbourne.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Lyon is known for his quirky press conferences, most recently throwing a question back to journalists after St Kilda's 10-point loss to Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When questioned about why the Saints were unable to capitalise when the Power lost three stars in quick succession to injury, Lyon turned it back on reporters.<\/p>\n

"Yeah, what did you observe?" Lyon said.<\/p>\n

"Yeah, I don't know, where do you put them (Port)? What are they, top what? You're local journos, where do you put them?".<\/p>\n

\ufeffNow Cornes has declared that Lyon's personality is helping shield him from facing the truth about St Kilda's floundering start to 2024.<\/p>\n

"Because he has a lot of friends in the media and because he's an intimidating or scary figure, he gets a really good run," Cornes said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

"If Ross\ufeff Lyon was Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn coach) and he had that squad and the expectation on what they're supposed to be and the hype around pre-season, there'd be a lot more criticism of comments suggesting they're close (to a flag).<\/p>\n

"They're a mile off it.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Matthew Lloyd agreed with\ufeff Cornes' analysis, calling on the Saints, who haven't won a premiership in 58 years, to dig deep to uncover their path to success.<\/p>\n

Lloyd wondered if they are better off working towards a rebuild, or \ufeffattempting to push for September.<\/p>\n

"They've come to a bit of a fork in the road, St Kilda, about what they do \ufefffrom here," Lloyd said.<\/p>\n

"They haven't got quite enough young talent to get them through\ufeff (to finals)."<\/p>\n

St Kilda exceeded expectations in 2023, qualifying for the finals, but look on track to miss out this season.<\/p>\n
