In October 2021, then-Melbourne teammates Smith, Cameron Munster and Chris Lewis were each suspended for one match and fined a total of $49,000<\/a> after a video emerged of the three players in a hotel room with a white substance on the table<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the Keegan and Company<\/em> podcast, hosted by former Titans and Eels second-rower Keegan Hipgrave, Smith aired new details surrounding the aftermath of the incident and its impact on his family.<\/p>\n

The video was brought to light ahead of the league's annual Dally M awards night, which Smith attended with his mother. He went on to take out the Hooker of the Year award.<\/p>\n

"As we're walking out of the hotel bro, we get this message from the general manager of the Storm saying, 'This video is about to go viral' and there's a video of me in front of the table doing stuff I shouldn't have been doing," Smith said.<\/p>\n

"I was like, 'I'm so sorry Mum, I'm so sorry'.<\/p>\n

"It sucked, bro, it sucked. But not for me. It sucked for my mum \u2014 I wanted her to enjoy her f—ing night.<\/p>\n

"Then bro what really f—ing hit home was that my niece and my nephew were getting bullied at school because of something I did.<\/p>\n

\"Brandon<\/p>\n

"You know, I f—ing did that and hearing that from my brother and just seeing that shit bro, that was definitely something that hurt my heart bad."<\/p>\n

Known to be a larrikin, controversy and indiscretion have followed Smith throughout his eight-year career.<\/p>\n

However, the\ufeff repercussions of the white powder scandal really showed the 27-year-old that one's actions can have far-reaching consequences.<\/p>\n

"You being an idiot caused so much grief to your family and your loved ones \u2026 like letting them down is the ultimate fear for me, and when it affects the people around you, that's when it really hits home," he said.<\/p>\n

"And all I have for that is just if anyone feels like they're going to make the wrong decision at the time, it's not you've got to think about, it's the consequences you've got to face, it's the consequences everyone around you has to face.<\/p>\n

"That's the one that hurts the most."<\/p>\n
