Reports around Latrell Mitchell<\/a>'s potential desire to withdraw from game one<\/a> of State of Origin<\/a> could come with a twist as an NRL clause comes to light.<\/p>\n

The clause lists that if a player is selected for a representative team and withdraws, the players agrees they will not be available to play for their club in any game he would've been able to play for a representative team.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThe NRL's argument will be the reason they are paid so well is because the money that Origin generates for the game and they need their best players available," 9News and The Sydney Morning Herald reporter Michael Chammas revealed on Nine's 100% Footy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Former NSW Blues coach Phil Gould explained \ufeffthat players have previously made attempts to pull out of Origin.<\/p>\n

"It has raised its \ufeffhead a few times, normally it's senior players that are changing clubs or getting on their last final big deal and the club is saying 'if you're going to get this money and finish off your career, we need you every week'," he said.<\/p>\n

"Some players after good service or long-term service for representative football have been given consideration to pull out. There have been a few over the years that have tried to pull out or clubs have pulled them out for various reasons."<\/p>\n

News of the clause comes after Kalyn Ponga withdrew from Origin duty last year to focus on the Knights. \ufeff<\/p>\n

However, Gould moved to clarify the reasoning behind that decision.<\/p>\n

"I think everyone understood that \ufeffbecause he had severe concussion issues, he was playing five-eighth, he'd been injured and spent no time on the field," he said.<\/p>\n

"So everyone understood when he was saying 'I haven't really done any reps at fullback, I'm not playing with any confidence, I've had these concussion issues' and stood him down.<\/p>\n

"Whether or not he was going to be picked was another thing as well."<\/p>\n

Gould went on to \ufeffdescribe the Latrell situation as "strange" before clarifying his belief the South Sydney fullback had announced it himself instead of it being reported through the media.<\/p>\n

"The Latrell situation, he was playing early in the year, playing well, he's just had a (suspension), I can't understand why he suddenly makes himself unavailable other than the fact that pretty much everyone else in the game knows he doesn't really want to play Origin," he said before clarifying and apologising to Mitchell over the confusion.<\/p>\n

"From \ufeffthe outside looking in, I've always had the impression he doesn't want to play Origin."<\/p>\n

Blues legend Paul Gallen implied the clause from the NRL was confusing, considering Manly great Jamie Lyon made himself exempt from Origin in 2010.<\/p>\n

"If he \ufeffdoesn't want to play and makes himself unavailable, I don't see why he should miss games for South Sydney. We've had Jamie Lyon in the past," he said.<\/p>\n
