Shane van Gisbergen<\/a> has paid special tribute to his mum who passed away just days before his superspeedway debut in the NASCAR Cup Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Karen Wallace, aged 64, died \ufeffafter a short illness.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, due to his racing commitments in the United States, van Gisbergen couldn't return home for his mother's funeral last week.<\/p>\n

The news of Wallace's passing came on the eve of van Gisbergen's first double-header appearance on a speedway.<\/p>\n

The Kiwi raced in the Xfinity Series and Cup Series at Talladega Superspeedway on the same weekend.<\/p>\n

Both cars carried the name "Wallace" on the driver's side where his own name would normally feature.<\/p>\n

"Been a pretty tough couple of weeks here with my mum passing back home in NZ," van Gisbergen wrote on social media.<\/p>\n

"Thanks to my teams for letting me run her last name on my door the past couple of weekends."<\/p>\n

Van Gisbergen finished 28th in the Cup Series race at Talladega and 22nd in the Xfinity Series race.<\/p>\n

His most recent outing at Dover Motor Speedway saw him come home 18th where he once again carried the Wallace name on his door trim.<\/p>\n
