UPDATED:<\/strong> T\ufeffhe career of Roosters<\/a> champion Luke Keary<\/a> will end prematurely, with the champion playmaker confirming he will call it quits at the end of 2024.<\/p>\n

Media outlets including The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> first reported that the veteran five-eighth would be announcing his retirement from rugby league.<\/p>\n

Keary will see out this current season, but forfeit the last year of his contract, which is worth about $800,000, after deciding to hang up the boots.<\/p>\n

In a statement released by the club on Monday afternoon, the 32-year-old revealed his plans to finish his NRL career at season's end in a huge blow for the Tricolours.<\/p>\n

"It's a decision I have thought long and hard about and I know it's the right one for me and my family," Keary said.<\/p>\n

"Rugby league has been a huge part of my life, and I'm proud of the career I've had … [it] is the ultimate team sport, and I wouldn't be here today without my teammates, coaches, support staff, family, friends and mentors.<\/p>\n

"It's been a huge honour to play most of my career with the Sydney Roosters. This club and this area have become my home and I can't thank all the staff, and all our members and sponsors enough. Every time I put that Roosters jersey on, I gave every bit of myself to it and through the good and bad I hope I have been able to make you all proud.<\/p>\n

"I'm looking forward to taking on the new challenges in my post-footy career, but right now, my main focus is on giving my all for this great club for the remainder of our 2024 campaign. I'm excited about what we are building towards, and I look forward to creating special memories throughout the rest of the year."<\/p>\n

Keary signed a one-year extension recently, but has opted to call it a day a year early.<\/p>\n

He also thanked current coach Trent Robinson, who paid tribute to the former NSW State of Origin representative after first bringing him to Bondi in 2017.<\/p>\n

"Luke is our vice-captain and a man of high integrity who has always pushed beyond the limits of his physical capability," the coach said.<\/p>\n

"He has pushed through pain and bled in our jersey to be the best teammate he can be. His fire and craft have made him one of the toughest players that I have coached.<\/p>\n

"I thank Luke for his commitment to the Roosters and his honesty in our relationship as a player and coach."<\/p>\n

Keary has suffered a number of concussions in recent years, but there is no indication that has played a role in his call and it does not fall under the medical retirement criteria.<\/p>\n

The news comes less than a week after Cronulla star Dale Finucane announced his premature retirement\ufeff due to repeated head knocks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Keary made his NRL debut in 2013 for South Sydney, and won the 2014 premiership alongside Adam Reynolds in the Rabbitohs line-up.<\/p>\n

He jumped ship to rival club the Roosters in 2017, and won grand finals in 2018 and 2019 with the Tricolours.<\/p>\n

\"Luke<\/p>\n

Despite being one of the NRL's best five-eighths for a long period of time, Keary's representative career never fully took off.<\/p>\n

He played one Origin game for New South Wales in 2020 but was never seen in the Blues jersey again, while also representing Australia on two occasions in 2018.<\/p>\n

\ufeffKeary will be one of a number of high-profile players to leave the Roosters at season's end with Kiwi prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves heading to Super League, while gun utility backs Joseph Manu and Joseph Suaalii are both jumping ship to play rugby.<\/p>\n
