Any fears AI will take over world motorsport have been put to bed for now after a bizarre finish to the first Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League event.<\/p>\n

The AI racing series \u2013 dubbed A2RL \u2013 made its long-awaited debut with a handful of robot-controlled Dallara-built SF19 single-seaters.<\/p>\n

The cars typically race in Japan's Super Formula series where they cut lap times only a few seconds off the pace of Formula 1<\/a> \u2013 though the robots were nowhere near as quick as their human counterparts.<\/p>\n

The modified AI-controlled cars carry cameras and sensors that feed information back to a computer, gathering data to make decisions every five milliseconds.<\/p>\n

AI-controlled motorsport isn't an entirely new phenomenon with events previously held in Europe and North America in recent years. However, the A2RL series is the first to pit cars against each other in races.<\/p>\n

The inaugural event wasn't without teething issues. A series of trials and qualifying sessions were punctuated by numerous incidents.<\/p>\n

One car spun on its own into the first turn while another took a corner too early and slammed into the wall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In more bizarre scenes, one car rear-ended another under brakes, sending it into the air momentarily.<\/p>\n

The feature race was largely held at pedestrian speeds as cars spun out or stopped.<\/p>\n

On lap four of the scheduled eight-lap distance, the race-leading Polimove car locked up its tyres and spun.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Unimore car behind managed to avoid the former race leader and almost ground to a halt after passing the scene of the incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the same time, two cars further behind stopped on the track seemingly unwilling to pass the stopped car under yellow flag conditions.<\/p>\n

"It's impressive technology, not ideal for a race, but it's impressive technology that we've managed to see four cars race together," said ex-Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer on commentary.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffNow four cars stopped on the same straight very, very polite with each other giving each other enough space. The technology is working. It can obviously see what's around with all those aforementioned sensors. There are plenty onboard for it to realise when it should advance and when it shouldn't \u2013 there's a car ahead.\ufeff It has recognised that quite clearly as has the car in front of that."<\/p>\n

Racing was stopped and after a lengthy delay the event resumed for a dash to the chequered flag.<\/p>\n

Unimore led the race until it suddenly stopped and was passed by TUM, who earlier in the race had stopped.<\/p>\n

Although the event was riddled with incidents, organisers were happy with how it played out.<\/p>\n

"Look at it in a year, or a year and a half from now. I'm not sure it will be the same," said Dr Giovanni Pau, technical director at the Autonomous Robotics Research Center in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n

The event also saw ex-Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat go head-to-head with an AI car in an exhibition.<\/p>\n

"We are seeing some history today, which is great to be part of," said Kvyat.<\/p>\n

"It was hard to imagine not long ago that this could happen \u2013 artificial intelligence cars \u2013 and now they are doing a very good job.\u00a0<\/p>\n
