Australian Olympic great Susie O'Neill says Brisbane can "absolutely" host the 2032 Games because of the city's well-established infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Queensland's capital was this week confirmed as the International Olympic Committee's preferred candidate to host the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics<\/a>, after the executive board approved of the Future Host Summer Commission's findings.<\/p>\n

While the host city of the 2032 Games is yet to be revealed, the location could be finalised before this year's postponed Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n

And O'Neill, who clinched gold in the 200-metre freestyle at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and hails from Brisbane, has full faith in the city's ability to host the Games.<\/p>\n

"I think definitely," O'Neill said in a chat with Wide World of Sports radio host James Bracey.<\/p>\n

"We obviously haven't hosted an event that big before. We've hosted the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

"But the Olympic movement is moving towards a different model – one that's not so big and flashy. They want cities that already have a lot of infrastructure for sports venues in place. South-east Queensland already has about 80 per cent of the venues in place.<\/p>\n

"We obviously have to work a lot on public transport and infrastructure around the Games.<\/p>\n

"I think it'd be a kick-start to the region and maybe get things moving a bit faster than they would have.<\/p>\n

"But absolutely, yes – I think we can host it."<\/p>\n

Under the new bidding system, there isn't a major reveal of the kind in which Sydney landed the 2000 Games. Bidding countries instead engage in ongoing dialogue with the IOC to ensure the huge expense attached to making a Games bid is minimised.<\/p>\n

O'Neill, who competed at the 1992 Barcelona Games, 1996 Atlanta Games and 2000 Sydney Olympics, has fond memories of the moment she heard the 2000 Games would be held in Australia.<\/p>\n

"I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 20 and it was seven years before the Olympics were going to be held, so it was 1993," O'Neill said.<\/p>\n

"I was at the Institute of Sport on a swimming camp and we had a big breakfast early in the morning to watch the announcement. It was surreal and I remember being so excited and thinking, 'I hope I'm able to hold on for the next seven years'.<\/p>\n

"At 20 as a swimmer, even back then, it kind of felt like maybe I was getting on a bit. But I remember going to training that day and being so excited and thinking, 'I really want to do that'.<\/p>\n

"Imagine kids that are 10-15 today, especially in Brisbane – they would be super-excited."<\/p>\n
