C\ufeffalls for a change to rugby league kick-offs have been reignited following an ugly incident on Anzac Day.<\/p>\n

The annual blockbuster between St George Illawarra<\/a> and the Roosters<\/a> was marred when Dragons centre Moses Suli was concussed on the first play.<\/p>\n

Suli was knocked out when trying to tackle Chooks prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, and took no further part in the game.<\/p>\n

"That's hard to watch," league legend Andrew Johns noted on Nine.<\/p>\n

The incident led to both coaches being quizzed on potential changes post-match.<\/p>\n

The criticism of the traditional kick-off is it results in 100-plus kilogram players running full-speed into one another from as far as 50 metres apart.<\/p>\n

While the game is inherently risky in and of itself, \ufeffthere's debate around limiting this type of contact in games.<\/p>\n

America's NFL has already implemented changes in an attempt to limit the risk of serious injury after kick-offs.<\/p>\n

"It's a tough one, isn't it? We want to play this really tough gladiator sport, we want to get down there off kick-offs and have good contact with the front-rowers," Dragons coach Shane Flanagan said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

"But we see (injuries) too often – I don't know the answer, but we see it too often.<\/p>\n

"When you see it to one of your players it's just not nice to see.<\/p>\n

"I don't know how we stop it, unless we start with a play-the-ball… and that would be something I'd not like to see.<\/p>\n

"But in the modern game we can't have these concussions, we need to look after the players.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Rugby league is one of several sports globally grappling with the issue of long-term concussion impacts on athletes.<\/p>\n

The threat of future class action is forcing administrators into changes – sometimes drastic – in an attempt to mitigate the risks.<\/p>\n

Roosters coach Trent Robinson believes kick-offs will be altered before too long.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"It's a really hard one because I love kick-offs because they set a statement to how we wanted to play today," Robinson said.<\/p>\n

"But we don't want to see that for Moses (Suli).<\/p>\n

"I think we can see that we're getting to the point where it needs to shift. I think they tried to do it through the short kick-offs, but it's not enough.<\/p>\n
