29 years after the very first draw in the very first Anzac Day match between Essendon<\/a> and Collingwood<\/a>, history has repeated itself.<\/p>\n

After a heartbreaking miss from Bomber Kyle Langford with just two minutes to spare in the final term, followed by Pie Jamie Elliott's crucial dropped mark seconds later, the game resulted in an 85-85 draw.<\/p>\n

On top of those two crucial misses, a slip from Essendon's Nick Hind, allowed Magpie Beau McCreery \ufeffto boot a goal to edge the reigning premiers in front in the final term<\/p>\n

\ufeffBack in 1995, the sides finished the inaugural Anzac Day match at 111-a-piece.<\/p>\n

There is no extra time in home-and-away matches, only finals and the grand final. Each side receives two of a possible four points for the draw.<\/p>\n

However, veteran Magpie Scott Pendlebury has suggested it's time to rid the bye during the season too.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Extra time?," Pendlebury asked on 7 post-match.<\/p>\n

"Everyone had their chances. Obviously, we got a little bit lucky there with them (Langford) kicking a point there.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Collingwood captain Darcy Moore echoed Pendlebury's idea.<\/p>\n

"A bit of extra time would be good for the plot. Golden point would be a bit of fun," Moore told Fox Footy post-match.\ufeff<\/p>\n

There was one highlight for the reigning premiers, however with Pendlebury notching up his 10,000th disposal, the most of any V\/AFL player in the game's history<\/a> since statistics have been recorded.<\/p>\n

Pendlebury collected 23 disposals in the draw\ufeff, but it was a humble handball in the first term that held the most weight.<\/p>\n

The dual premiership Pie received a standing ovation for the stat that sees his stand alone in the history books.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Bombers skipper Zach Merrett was awarded the Anzac Day medal for his best-on-ground performance, which saw him collect 31 disposals.<\/p>\n

"We're so grateful to be part of this special day in Australia's history," Merrett said post-match.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Moore also called on fans to continue to donate to the Anzac Appeal which supports returning servicemen and women to transition back into normal life.\ufeff<\/p>\n

93,644 were in attendance at the MCG for the 29th edition of the Anzac Day match.<\/p>\n

It was the third-highest Anzac crowd since the game's inception in 1995, behind the crowd for that first game 29 years ago and last year's attendance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
