R\ufeffoosters<\/a> coach Trent Robinson<\/a> has gone into bat for the trainer at the centre of Canterbury<\/a>'s legal fight.<\/p>\n

Travis Touma has been named as the Bulldogs staff member being accused of "unlawful corporal punishment" methods by former player Jackson Topine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Topine was on Wednesday revealed as the former player who has launched a $4 million legal case against the NRL club in the NSW Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

The claims stem from a training session on July 18 last year, when Topine was reportedly late to training and then asked to wrestle 35 teammates as punishment.<\/p>\n

Topine later took personal leave from the club, and then had his contract terminated by the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

\ufeff\ufeffIn a statement of claim lodged with the court, lawyers say Topine was subjected to a "deprivation of liberty" and "unlawful corporal punishment", saying he suffered "psychiatric injury" and "physical and mental impairment" as a result of his treatment.<\/p>\n

Touma is one of the most experienced trainers in the NRL and worked with the Roosters for a decade before joining the Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

While careful not to comment on the legal case specifically, Robinson on Wednesday spoke in defence of Touma.<\/p>\n

"Travis is a very experienced trainer and a really outstanding person, and his care factor is as high as I've seen in any staff member in any club I've been involved with," Robinson said.<\/p>\n

"I can't speak to the incident, but I know who Travis is and the quality of the person that he is, and the care that he has for his players.<\/p>\n

"You have to push players to be at their best, and you've got to care for them at the same time.<\/p>\n

"You don't always get it right, but if you care for your program and the players that you have in that program then, for the most part, you'll get it right."\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs released a statement on Wednesday confirming the legal action brought by Topine.<\/p>\n

"The board unanimously agreed that it would vigorously defend the club and its employee Travis Touma against the claim lodged today by a former player," the club said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
