South Sydney<\/a> coach Jason Demetriou says he was glad to hear axed hooker Damien Cook<\/a> was "frustrated" and "angry" at being dumped from the team a fortnight ago.<\/p>\n

The veteran rake became a casualty of a disastrous run of form for the Rabbitohs, which was only halted by the bye in round seven.<\/p>\n

The two points earned from their bye lifted the Bunnies off the bottom of the NRL<\/a> table, where they found themselves after losing five of their first six games to start the year.<\/p>\n

Cook is a State of Origin incumbent and one of the most experienced hookers in the league, and admitted he was "frustrated, angry, sad" at being dumped from the team<\/a> by the coach.<\/p>\n

But that radio interview a fortnight ago was exactly what Demetriou wanted\ufeff to hear.<\/p>\n

\"Damien<\/p>\n

\ufeff\ufeff"As I said to the players, 17 blokes get picked every week… there are 36 players in a squad, with a few injuries there are 15 who don't get picked every week," he told media on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"You want to feel hurt, \ufeffyou should be hurt if you're not getting picked.<\/p>\n

"It's not different to Tallis Duncan and Sean Keppie at the moment, they are hurt but they've got to fight their way back in\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"Cooky is an experienced player, we need him at his best."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Cook has been recalled for the trip to Melbourne on Anzac Day.<\/p>\n

Demetriou was quizzed as to why he would drop an experienced player, only to bring them back one game later.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThere were some things we need to work with, conversations that will stay between Damien and myself," Demetriou said.<\/p>\n

"But I thought he handled that \ufeffreally well, he was really honest in that conversation and honest in how he handled going back to NSW Cup.<\/p>\n

\"Jason<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe have an opportunity now to play two hookers, with two hookers who are very different in how they play the game but can complement each other really well.<\/p>\n

"We need to… use that as an asset for us."<\/p>\n

Cook will start against the Storm on Thursday, while young rake Peter Mamouzelos will play off the bench.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Rabbitohs face a tough two weeks with games against Melbourne and Penrith\ufeff – two powerhouses of the past decade.<\/p>\n

The coach, though, knows what needs to be fixed.<\/p>\n

"It's all defence for us," he said.<\/p>\n
