Australian<\/a> all-rounder Mitchell Marsh<\/a> is still expected to take the field at the men's T20 World Cup<\/a> in June despite his recovery from a torn hamstring taking longer than expected.<\/p>\n

After returning home to Perth<\/a> to enhance his recovery two weeks ago, Marsh has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League season<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His side, the Delhi Capitals, had remained hopeful the 32-year-old would return for the second half of the season but the club, in consultation with Cricket Australia medical staff, has drawn the curtains.<\/p>\n

Delhi coach Ricky Ponting did not believe Marsh would be back this season, stating Cricket Australia did not want to take any chances with him.<\/p>\n

"I don't think he will be coming back [to India]," he told media.<\/p>\n

"Cricket Australia were really keen to have Mitchell at home to start his recovery process, so we sent him back as soon as we could.<\/p>\n

"They have been managing his rehab over the last couple of weeks now. I spoke to him the other day, it seems like it has taken a little bit longer than he first thought, to get over it.<\/p>\n

"I don't think the World Cup will be an issue but I think it will be hard to see him coming back here at the back end of this tournament."<\/p>\n

Marsh suffered a partial tear in his right hamstring at the start of the month.<\/p>\n

He had featured in just four matches for Delhi, \ufeffscoring a total of 61 runs, while taking one wicket. His best score in this IPL season was a knock of 23 against the Rajasthan Royals on March 28.<\/p>\n

Last month, \ufeffAustralia's coach Andrew McDonald hinted that Marsh was in the box seat to captain the country at the T20 World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since Aaron Finch's retirement, Marsh has repeatedly served as interim captain of the short-form side along with Matthew Wade.<\/p>\n

"I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so I've just got to get that ticked off in certain areas," McDonald said after Australia's Test series victory over New Zealand.<\/p>\n

"We're happy and comfortable with the way he's been able to operate with that T20 team.<\/p>\n

"We think he's the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course."<\/p>\n

Marsh has played 54 T20I for Australia and boasts a batting average of 34.09 and a bowling average of 22.76 with an economy of 7.74.<\/p>\n

This year's IPL season wraps up on May 26 with the final in Chennai.<\/p>\n

Australia's preliminary World Cup squad will be named later this month before the final team of 15 players is announced on May 25.<\/p>\n
