P\ufeffhil Gould<\/a> has leapt to the defence of Jack Hetherington, claiming the Knights<\/a> prop was "mucking around" during a bizarre scuffle with Reed Mahoney.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old is facing a week on the sidelines<\/a> after confronting the Bulldogs hooker in the tunnel on Sunday, pushing Mahoney after both players were sin-binned.<\/p>\n

Hetherington has a checkered past with the NRL judiciary and his latest incident has divided opinion across the game, with Paul Gallen urging the enforcer to change his ways or risk throwing away his potential<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Gould however, the tunnel run-in between Hetherington and Mahoney was light-hearted in nature and backed the Newcastle front-rower to bounce back.<\/p>\n

"Honestly, knowing Jack as I do, he is playing around there \u2026 he's just taking the mickey," the Canterbury boss told Nine's 100% Footy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I don't think he was anywhere near serious in that incident. Reed Mahoney told me today that he was actually smiling when he was jigging on the spot.<\/p>\n

"He is a hot-tempered sort of thing – but this sort of thing, he would think it's funny."\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hetherington has spent plenty of time on the sidelines over the years and his latest ban comes at a poor time for the Knights, who are struggling for results and will now be without fullback Kalyn Ponga<\/a> for an extended period.<\/p>\n

\ufeffGallen – who has been open about his own journey from an on-field liability to State of Origin captain – believes Hetherington has all the makings of a rep player.<\/p>\n

"It's not a good look," the Sharks legend said.<\/p>\n

"I think he's an ultra-competitive person, but he reminds me of me when I was young.<\/p>\n

"As far as athleticism goes, he is big and strong and powerful and he's extremely fast – he has attributes physically to possibly be a rep player.<\/p>\n

"He is just ruining himself."<\/p>\n
