Melbourne great Billy Slater<\/a> has \ufeffdoubled down on his criticism of the league's revised kick disruptor rule.<\/p>\n

Interpretations of the disruptor rule were once again thrust into the spotlight across round seven with its enforcement, or lack thereof, questioned during the Storm's 18-12 win over the Roosters<\/a> on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Speaking post-match, Tricolours coach Trent Robinson vented his frustrations towards the inconsistent application of the rule<\/a>, arguing that lock Connor Watson was taken out of a contest under the disruptor rule and should have received a penalty.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's The Sunday Footy Show<\/em><\/a>, Slater was unimpressed with the NRL<\/a>'s pre-season rule changes around 'disruptors'.<\/p>\n

"When you make these \ufeffstupid interpretations of the rule changes, you're always going to get these arguments and I don't think it was necessary to make this change in the off-season," he said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

During his weekly football briefing last week, N\ufeffRL head of football Graham Annesley\ufeff<\/a> spent time explaining the league's crackdown on 'disruptors', claiming there has been an increase in tactical interference across the game.<\/p>\n

He outlined that referees \ufeffneed to be looking at the eyes of the chaser, amongst other identifiers, to determine whether a player is disrupting a contest.<\/p>\n

Slater argued the new interpretations are "unnecessary" and confusing.<\/p>\n

"I think it's hard on the referees. I think the referees do a really good job," he said on Nine's The Billy Slater Podcast<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"But to bring all these new interpretations into our game \u2014 look, I went pretty hard on The Sunday Footy Show<\/em>. I just think it's unnecessary.<\/p>\n

"I don't think it's necessary to put any more guidelines around the referees to determine whether a player has the intent to go for the ball or not. They get it right the majority of the time and they have a good understanding of when a player has genuine intent to go for the ball or whether they're interfering with the opposition player \u2014 whether it be an obstruction, whether it be a disruptor, all these things \u2014 if you interfere with the other player competing for the ball and you're not competing for the ball.<\/p>\n

"You don't have to catch the footy \u2014 there's no rule that you have to catch the footy or go to catch the footy, you can tap it back.<\/p>\n

"You look at that game on Thursday night, the Melbourne Storm and the Roosters. There were five tries scored, and they all came off kicks. Every try came off a kick, so it's a crucial part of the game.<\/p>\n

"If you're genuine with your attempt to go and compete, well, play on, you don't need all these guidelines around.<\/p>\n

"I just think it's unnecessary to actually create confusion, not for just the referee, but the coaches. We've got Trent Robinson sitting in a post-match press conference talking about, 'Oh, he was a disruptor, he didn't do this because that's what the NRL came out and said in the pre-season'.<\/p>\n

"If they interfere with the player and they're not genuinely competing, well, it's a penalty and they get that right most of the time. Don't overcomplicate the game."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
