AFL<\/a> pundits Eddie McGuire<\/a> and Jimmy Bartel<\/a> have called on the league to explain how players should defend themselves in aerial contests after GWS<\/a> skipper Toby Greene<\/a> was offered a one-game suspension for rough conduct<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, match review officer\ufeff Michael Christian graded Greene's high contact on Carlton<\/a>'s Jordan Boyd as careless conduct of medium impact and high contact and handed him a one-match ban as punishment.<\/p>\n

The\ufeff Giants have since confirmed they will challenge Greene's suspension at the Tribunal on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In the fourth quarter of the Blues' 19-point victory on Saturday afternoon<\/a>, Greene leapt into the air in a marking contest, extending his leg and turning his body as Boyd also left the ground to contest the ball after running back with the flight.<\/p>\n

The clash saw Greene's shoulder make contact with Boyd's head.<\/p>\n

Boyd did not leave the field following the incident and was awarded a free kick for high contact.<\/p>\n

With contentious \ufeffaerial contests dominating Tribunal proceedings this season, McGuire argued that a precedent had been set after Essendon forward Peter Wright received a four-match suspension<\/a> last month for his head-high hit on Sydney's Harry Cunningham.<\/p>\n

In getting to the crux of the issue, Bartel\ufeff urged the AFL to explain what a player should do in these types of aerial situations.<\/p>\n

"I think the key here is actually to ask, \ufeff'What is reasonable in the circumstance?'," he said on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy<\/em><\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffSo, when two players are in the air and one of them is probably moving at about 20 kilometres an hour \u2014 [in this case] Toby Greene. Boyd's probably not that quick. The Tribunal should ask what would be reasonable and fair in the circumstances.<\/p>\n

"People say, 'Just don't bump him in the head'. That's really easy to say when you look at it frame by frame and in milliseconds."<\/p>\n

Bartel also claimed that Greene's choice to turn his body mid-air was a "natural human reaction" as he was left with limited options.<\/p>\n

"This happened in the air with two players running in from either direction [and] they've met in the air. So, the only two options he (Greene) has, apart from turning his shoulder and bracing, are to [pull up] like, 'I'm scared' \u2014 in which they both get hurt \u2014 or drive through with his knee and then there would've been Boyd's chin everywhere across Marvel Stadium."<\/p>\n

\ufeffMcGuire suggested that the wrong player in the Greene-Boyd incident was being protected by the AFL's definition of duty of care.<\/p>\n

"The duty of care in this situation is on the bloke going back with the flight of the ball," he argued.<\/p>\n

"It's one thing for the AFL to \ufefftell you what not to do but they've got to tell you what you can do.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffSo, the person who is the angel, you know, 'don't go where angels fear to tread', is the person coming back with the ball. And as a result of that, you've had Peter Wright get rubbed out for a month and Toby Greene is now going to get a week… when all he was doing was going at the ball.
