O\ufeffscar Piastri<\/a> has refuted Lance Stroll<\/a>'s claim that the domino effect crash at the Chinese Grand Prix<\/a> was caused by the field unexpectedly bunching up.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the second race restart under the safety car, fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> made contact with \ufeffPiastri after Stroll rear-ended his RB under safety car conditions.<\/p>\n

The race was close to being restarted behind the safety car on lap 27 when Fernando Alonso<\/a> locked up, triggering a chain reaction into the penultimate turn.<\/p>\n

Momentarily distracted, Stroll \ufefffailed to slam on the brakes before driving into the back of Ricciardo.<\/p>\n

The incident brought the curtain down on Ricciardo's race \ufeffwhile Piastri's \ufeffMCL38 sustained "significant" damage.<\/p>\n

The force of the crash broke Stroll's front wing but he was able to continue, finishing the 56-lap race in 15th position.<\/p>\n

The incident, and Stroll's subsequent reaction, \ufeffleft Ricciardo reeling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking post-race, Stroll was not apologetic, \ufeffinitially laying blame on the cars in front of him for suddenly breaking rather than acknowledging his own inattentiveness.<\/p>\n

"The car in front of me (Ricciardo) just stopped from like 60 to zero, so a really stupid incident. It was one of those," he said.<\/p>\n

However, \ufeffPiastri was not buying the Aston Martin driver's version of events.<\/p>\n

"Everyone else didn't crash into each other," he said.<\/p>\n

"I think in that kind of corner with that type of curve, you always need to expect that."<\/p>\n

Piastri crossed the line in eighth place despite contending with damage to the back of his car. His teammate Lando Norris stepped onto the podium after clinching second.<\/p>\n

"I don't know how much time it was worth but looking at the back of the car after the race, it was pretty destroyed," he said of the impact the crash had on his race.<\/p>\n

"I think in the first part of the race it was looking OK \u2014 lacking a little bit of pace but not too bad \u2014 but then after the restart it was just very much literal damage limitation.<\/p>\n

"I think it explains quite a lot of the deficit."<\/p>\n

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella reinforced how the damage had hindered Piastri's performance at the Shanghai International Circuit.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Oscar has damage on the diffuser. He lost a significant amount of rear downforce \u2014 equivalent I would say [to] four-tenths of a second, something like that," he said.<\/p>\n

"When we heard the numbers, I wasn't very optimistic that we could have held positions like Oscar has been able to do.<\/p>\n

"So while his result obviously is less noticeable than Lando's, I think he did a good job in trying to understand how to drive the car when he lost so much rear downforce.<\/p>\n

"The car was very oversteery, obviously because you lose downforce on the rear axle, but he managed to make some adaptations and keep [Lewis] Hamilton behind, so that's also a strong result."<\/p>\n

Stroll\ufeff received a 10-second penalty and two penalty points as punishment for the incident.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
