IndyCar Series<\/a> points leader Josef Newgarden was left fuming after an innocuous nudge ended his hopes of winning the Grand Prix of Long Beach.<\/p>\n

Newgarden was fighting race leader Scott Dixon for the win in the dying moments of the 85-lapper when Andretti Autosport driver Colton Herta hit the Team Penske driver.<\/p>\n

The nudge lifted Newgarden's rear wheels into the air at the tightest corner on the circuit and caused the car to go into anti-stall mode, effectively turning off his car.<\/p>\n

Newgarden lost power and slowed suddenly before being passed by Herta and Chip Ganassi Racing's Alex Palou at the final turn.<\/p>\n

The move went unpunished and Newgarden blew up on the radio.<\/p>\n

"How is that not a penalty?" he asked his team.<\/p>\n

The two-time champion spoke post-race on the broadcast where he called for IndyCar officials to review their procedures.<\/p>\n

"It seemed pretty obvious, he just misjudged it and ran into me," said Newgarden.<\/p>\n

\"Colton<\/p>\n

"Once I got lifted I went into anti-stall. I got lifted up off the ground a foot or two. I couldn't get going. I just had to wait.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You have to wait for the clutch to disengage and get the thing reset so I was just stalled there for a second.<\/p>\n

"I'm not going to say we were going to get (Scott) Dixon. It was actually very, very difficult for me to get the run that I needed to.<\/p>\n

"I think traffic was going to provide me an opportunity. That run right there, I was getting really excited about it. I think that was going to be my last chance. Never know if it would have pulled off or not. Maybe not. He was really quick.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I don't know how they were going as far as they were. I'm just not sure about the Herta deal. I think they (the officials) should look at that differently.<\/p>\n

"If you hit somebody\u2026 It is what it is. It'd be the same if I hit somebody, but if we've got to take a fourth we'll take a fourth."<\/p>\n

Herta stopped short of an apology when asked about the incident but took responsibility for it.<\/p>\n

"I think he set up pretty wide and was cutting back in, so he was a little bit slower at the apex," said Herta.<\/p>\n

"Ultimately, it's up to me to carry the right speed into the corner and not run into the back of people and I just misjudged it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It would have been fine but I think he hit anti-stall coming out of the corner and that's what really bottled him back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Definitely something to put in the back of my mind. I don't like to race like that, especially a guy like Josef who I have a lot of respect for."<\/p>\n

Like Newgarden, Herta was similarly bemused by race winner Dixon's ability to save enough fuel and clinch victory.<\/p>\n
